I find myself with a Commando with the CNW electric start and no air filter. The special one from K&N that easily fits that setup is unobtanium at the moment. Does anyone have suggestions for alternative air filters, since the ham can is out of the question.

I purchased a pair of conical filters from Burlen fuel system in the UK (who make Amal carbs)... with the carbs so close together one of them needs to be modified so they will fit.... not a difficult job and they do look the business

If you take the air filter back plate of a normal K&N will fit with no problems

I'm running a foam filter as recommended by Fast Eddie - seems to work well, but it is flammable - as I found out in 2019 with a direct short circuit...

The K&N NO-0100 is available on line, but fits inside the ham can housing. Why is the ham can out of the question?

The CNW starter solenoid would interfere with a ham can. I'm sure somebody was making a shorter ham can though?

The NO-0100 filter on my ‘72 inside the perforated surround.

It appears that the K&N R-0990 filter is a victim of the Covid slowdown. The same with K81 Dunlops. These short run, low volume items are not priorities for companies with problems getting materials and staff to get back up to speed and full production. Let's hope these companies don't discontinue items for our old classics altogether!

That's a possibility, but would require further work to relocate the key switch.
Geezer,
I have one of the KN filters that will work for you.It is one from Matt that I got before the narrower ones came out. It’s in good shape but harder to install. With this you won’t need to re-locate the switch.Yours for the asking.
Mike

The starter motor takes away the space for any conventional air cleaner:

If cNw is the only source for these, I'll need to procure a spare when they're back in stock.

Nope. Not yet. It's on the "list o' things to do" at cNw, I believe. One of our members posted his custom made version that looked very nice.
