Hi,

Does anybody have any recomendation towards or against using JP Australian made pistons in Norton Commando 850 engine?.

I would appreciate any advice, or experiences with this brand of piston.

Thanks guys,

Brewer.

Only experience was of a JP piston in a Matchless on a friends bike, it siezed in 20 yds due to machining being not finished properly. The relief area around the rings was not cut at all and the rings also had no give to them, first bit of heat and the piston siezed, piston was also a lot heavier than the original, seems one of their blanks can be used for lots of different pistons and in some lots of meat is left on. I would go for hepolites eg AE pistons or Cycle Craft, if using Cycle Craft pistons do not use their rings but use Hepolites.

Hi, Kommando.
Thanks for that information. It seems that these pistons are not up to scratch!!!! judging from the lack of respone that I have recieved.

I please, would also like to hear any opinions of anybody, who has installed these Pistons in 850 commandos,

Perhaps they are just crap and are a waste of money?????

Brewer.

I installed jp pistons on my 750 commando. I have not started the motor up yet, but I noticed that when I went to fit the barrels I had to take the barrel off and pistons, install the pistons then reconnect them to the rods. Usually rings have a taper on the top, these did not. Am I in for a nightmare?

Hi mcns,

I have not installed this brand of pistons in my bike.
However, I need to buy new pistons kits for my 850, and have been trying to do some research or get first hand opinions about these JP Pistons.
I have not had a lot of luck in doing so!

It would be great if there are other Commando riders out there who could share their experience with us about these pistons and rings.

Mcns, where do you live?

I know this reply is years after your inquiry but I used JP pistons in my 850 for about 2 years with no problems, they were different weights initially from memory I removed about 15 grams from one of them to match the others weight. Even after this they were 25 grams heavier than the standard pistons I replaced. I reckon I could notice a difference in the motors balance but they worked well and I deliberately never took it to the redline just in case. Recently the left hand piston burnt fore and aft due to an air leak in the carby manifold so I'm replacing them with other pistons and have been recommended to use Cycle craft pistons.

I recently installed a set of JP's into a BSA Golden Flash, 3500 miles with no problems.

No personnal experience but local engineers with good reputations say these pistons are Ok for ordinary work but should not be used for sporting or competion situations.

They do have a wide range of pistons for unusual older machinery so for the really old machinery almost the only option unless you get expensive one offs made.

In March last year, I rebuilt my 850 and the quote from JP Adelaide for the pistons was $40 more than RGM UK sending genuine Hepolite (Federal Mogul) direct to Melbourne. Personally I would always go with Hepolite for the 850.

G, day Brewer,
I made lots of enquires re the JP Pistons, (I'm in Adelaide), and eventually went with
the RGM.

John' spot on. JP have a very big range and sell into both motorcycle and automotive markets, but they don't make 500 of this and 500 of that. Ideal really for AJS,Matchless,Ariel, M20/M21, B25 etc etc. Federal Mogul just don't make Norton Pistons anymore. If you are lucky to find dealers (like RGM) who still have genuine old stock, then snap it up, because once they've gone, there won't be any new production.

spend a little more money and get the JSmotorsport's light weight pistons

very highly recommended by many people, vibration reduction, much lighter than stock, beautifully machined

Lots of suppliers now have new Commando Hepolite pistons as Federal Mogul sold the Hepolite brand name to W E Wassell.
The new Hepolite pistons are manufactured by JCC which I believe have already been available under the JCC/Emgo brand for some time.

And these pistons are made where - Taiwan ??
(not that there is anything wrong with that - if the pistons are any good ?).

Advertising them as NOS Hepolites or original Hepolites is just plain garbage though .... ??

I have EMGO pistons in my 850. My machinist recommended them. 3500 miles so far with no issues.

I didn't know they were being sold under the Hepolite label now.
