Nice work, isn't it !

I can recall quoting that 186 hp quoted there on here - and being told that wasn't possible !!
We note they are aiming for 200 bhp...

Glad to see the article gives some credit to Terry Prince for the design of the top ends. Though Horners have moved forward from their first machine built with complete 92 mm Prince top ends, (the 92mmx97mmm 1300 that made 135 hp), you can bet that design lessons from Terry are in every one of their bikes. Terry has also conitnued to refine his design, though ill health has put a stop to that now.

I have a set of Terry's latest and last 92 mm top ends which he says make more power than the older version which the Horner 1300 used. The 92mm top ends will get used with a 102mm race crank also from Terry.
The timing chest will get Terry's last racing cam design, the mk 5, designed by Fritz Egli jr. who used an autocad type cam development program borrowed from the Mercedes F1 team when he was lead engineer there. According to Terry these cams are pretty much magic.
It will be interesting to see how the power compares to Horners 1300. Their horsepower figures are at higher compression than I will run and on alcohol. Advatanges this 1360 should have are size, cam profile and better flowing head. Disadvsntages are the lower CR and fuel type.
Terry estimates 110 hp and around the same for torque, but on premium pump gas and at the rear wheel.

Its a wonder to behold and getting passed by its ole push rod soul.
To put into prospective Maney 920 makes 100 crank hp @ 7200, so ~92 hp / 100 cc, this Vincent make ~9.6 hp / 100 ccs but a 1000+ rpm faster, so yes Sire Wow.
Must better power plant ascetics to me and everyone else than the stamped out newbie buzz bombs the plastic is more interesting to look over.

And as this is an "Anachronistic" thread.....in 2010 seeing as custom made Vincents from Melbourne were common fare, these guys in South Australia decide to make their own humongous JAP replica circa 1938. And it went like a bloody rocket too.

Isnt it a pity Phil Irving is not still around to see all this. Wouldnt he have loved it.

Phil Irving stayed with my friend John Mcdougall for a couple of weeks when Phil and his wife Edith were on holiday in Vancouver in the early 80s. Both he and Phil Vincent were thrilled with all the Vincent interest at that time. When they originally planned the post war bikes during WW2 they felt the bikes would last ten years on average, at which time they would be cast off for whatever was new and better. How wrong they were!

Here it is seventy years from the design work for the postwar bikes and the club is stronger than ever, the parts supply excellent. And a very large percentage of the bikes are still in use all over the world.

It was also interesting that Irving gave a lot of credit for the Vincent design to Phil Vincent. Many people believe that the Vincent was entirely Irving's creation, but he told us that Vincent was primarily the designer of the suspension systems, frames, brakes etc, while Irving worked primarily on the engine design. Additionally many engine and cycle parts were designed by both men. A true collaboration.

Them big ole Brit v-twins sure make our Norton twins look like such small engined things. Here's a nice view of one having at it.

hello All. another wonderful day.

seeing these photos, I had to respond.

they are all very fine examples, but the one done in Aussie flag livery takes the cake. it is more beautiful than the 69 Yankee Bonny. the flag livery makes one very proud to be Aussie. Just like Phil Irving himself.

I had the privilige to speak to Phil many years ago . He was ill then but took the time to provide information to someone he did not know. He was very couretous and his knowledge of metallurgy was encyclopedic. my enquiry to him resulted in a wealth of new practical information.

I believe he was also involved in the Repco Brabham, another international success.

RIP Phil
Bradley

He was never given much credit by Brabham for the brilliant design work he did on that engine. To put it in perspective, consider Henry Ford Jr.'s 1960s quest to win the world's most coveted Auto race trophy- the 24 hr Lemans.
It is to auto racing what the IOM TT is to us, the ultimate prize.
Ford first tried to make an outright purchase of Ferrari for a steal of a deal at the time, something like 15 million. Ferrari agreed, then changed his mind and reneged on the deal. So Ford spent many times this amount to wrestle the trophy from Ferrari, Porsche and the other established Leman winners. Some years Ford would enter 5 cars and none would finish, on fire, broken and failed. Eventually, after teaming with Carrol Shelby and spending many more millions on development, they got the job done in rather spectacular fashion.
Compare this to Irving's acheivment at Lemans. Vincent is long since bankrupt, Irving is back home designing tractor engines or what have you when Brabham asks Irving if he could design an V8 engine for an assault on the 24 hr race. Irving does so in his usual all out, hands on manner and the bloody thing wins the 24 hr Lemans first time out! Btw, the Repco V8 has the exact same inspection caps as my Vincent uses, minus the Vincent logo.

Very few people even know the story, hopefully a few more do now.

Hello Worntorn

thanks for telling about the Repco Brabham. I did not know the whole story.. Amazing stuff, history.
Bradley

Thanks Glen for the extra info on the 2 Phils.
Phil Irving does seem to get most of the credit for the bikes some reason. But as you say both were very much involved.
I had heard a bit about Phil Irving's designing of the Repco Brabham V8 but didn't realize how it came about.

Hobot, this would make a good dirt bike for you, much easier to keep upright :

Alan, I started the Commando area side car thread so yes indeed I'm thinking about it knocking deer down instead of them me about all the time in the saddle. Vincents sure out class Norton in size and power though maybe one can match the power to mass ratio someday. There's are so so many side rig from the low down racer here to the fully enclosed VW buss, what to pick, then I saw it today A Police Car!

The best police cars we've had in Australia were in New South Wales in the 60s - the Morris Cooper S . Recently our Victoria police have been using Subaru WRXs, and some have found out their limitations.
