Hey, I am not really new to the group but I never post. I have a commando and really love it. I do some work on it here and there and it is by far my favorite toy in the garage to mess arou nd with. I have been working on parts of the bike I want to take on and others I am not so interested in yet. Right now I am working on the wheels, I have some questions about the wheels.

Does anyone have any ti[ps about powdercoating drums/rims? I would like to powdercoat the rear drum/hub and the front hub. I want to polish the front drum and mate it with the powdercoated hub. If you have had experience with this is there any tips I can get from you? I know powdercoat is thick and the space between the drum and hub is tight in the front.... Also if anyone has tips on experiences with rim powdercoating ie: chrome removal, durability with spokes chipping etc let me know. If theres negatives out there I want to know. I would hate to get these things put together and notice the spokes are chipping the paint somehow or the damn things dont come together right and all I needed to do was some slick trick you guys do all the time.

Heres a few pics of my bike. https://picasaweb.google.com/iceteanole ... directlink

Yes: Ask a good and experienced wheel builder whether he'd build a wheel with powdercoated items- they usually don't do that as the thick plastic coating yields under spoke tension and thus the spokes will take ages to settle. At least that is what I was told recently when I wanted black rims for a HD bobber.

I'd have the front hub/brake assembly polished, and laced up to some non-shouldered alloy wheels...

Welcome out of lurking status chemical icetea drinking Omaha steak eating nasty cheeseburger chips scarfing humanoid. After hundreds of motorcycle shows and rallys have never seen p.c. wheels but many have been painted and look quite sharp. Seating of spokes would be a concern ,settling in a concern yes and who wants to retighten 2 or 3 times to achieve this. Looks like the P.O.'s were quite Neandrathalish to the poor bike ,you seem to be on the right track. Roller layshaft bearing ? Vegetarian for dinner.

Your front hub is pure art. One of the nicest old school designs of mechanical engineering. Although not for everyones taste, the similar front hub on bike #38 at CNW is the show version.
Quite spectacular!

The rear brake plate looks excellent in black powder coat

Awesome responses, thanks for the tips too. I did some thread searching and also a little soul searching as well. I found a great writeup pn this site about doing the hub rebuild and stuff like that and although it looks fun, it did make me somewhat lazy. I think it pushed me somehow to the CNW site. I am gonna just send the hubs in and have them work their magic. I am usually looking for a challenge but I must have ate too many cheeseburger bites and now I am pulling the ripcord.

Talked to CNW and they will do the hubs polished and machine to fit the cool sealed bearings.

Found a powder coat place in my town and dropped the rims off. I also have a full set of stainless Buchanans spokes 8/10. I guess I will get all the stuff back and assemble. If I am lazy (i am) i will find someone to true em up.

I think I will put up with the spoke seating, I dont know what I will do when I have a tire mounted and some idiot chips my rim though :(

Decision made, commitment, ugh.

(Oh the Omaha steak guy, I dont eat them, i took a pic because my Triumph owning dad got robbed by a omaha steak guy a couple days before)

Ben,

You won't regret the finish work at CNW.

I almost did black powder coat on my rear brake plate but decided on the chrome finish. Either way, your hubs will look great!

Ben Omaha meat guy ate too much of his own product and robbed your poor dad due to testosterone, salts and nitrite buildup. The best polishing jobs use big guys with huge arms to press-push the metal hard into the polishing wheels which actually compresses the metal .Now these guys eat steak. If we're not supposed to eat meat then why did God make it taste so good ? :?:

Well I am thinking when I am done I will have a great set of wheels with a bike attached.

Although I dont eat Omaha steaks, I instead like the ones from Costco or the butcher. Once a steak hits a post office it sorta loses its charm!

That wheel looks insane.

see if your powder guy will at least put blanking plugs in the holes from the back side that will leave NO powder where the nipple seats in the rim. as to the stainless spokes you MUST use a lubricant on the threads and nipple heads
