Looking to put some clip-ons on a '71 commando I just bought. New to working on Nortons, how do I get the triple tree off so I can slide the bars on ? the Haynes is not friendly. Help !!

Here's the factory manual: http://britmoto.com/manuals/Manuals/750_man.pdf

Forks: Section G

The Commando steering stem is fixed to the upper yoke (tree) on '71-on models, and the fork stanchions/tubes are a taper-fit in the upper yoke.

Anyway, I suggest you read through the information in the factory manual.

Thanks. So if the tubes are taper fit into the triple tree can't I just pop it off with a mallet and 2x4 ?

Yes, or slacken the lower yoke pinch bolts and knock the fork tubes down as it shows in the manual.

The stem often rusts inside the lower yoke which can make it difficult to remove, so if you knock the upper yoke/tree upwards (after removing the retaining nut from below the lower yoke) and it doesn't want to move then the stem could be rusted solid inside the lower yoke.
