This is just one example of the many items I have seen....

I guess you could still rub it with 400 grit and paint it. At least you know it's not going to be all wavy like some of those crap tanks from India. I paid 350 for one a few months ago and it was so full of ridges and oil canning I had to return it... cost 85 for return freight. Ended up getting one from Sunset for 450. Wouldn't have been that bad without the return freight loss. Fred is asking 750 for roadster tanks. The one nice thing about having a chrome tank is , if you smudge the blue dot on your forehead while riding, you've got a handy built in mirror to use to reapply the dot.

I suspect that some of those buy it now auctions show some sold just to help nudge other buyers. The tank looks like it came off a BMW toy.

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the repro bits from India.

I bought a Roadster tank from a seller called "Endfield County". Offered 100 pounds and they accepted. With shipping it cost $218.00.
Total piece of crap. Much more rectangular than the photos would have you believe. Very much hand made looking. Lots of badly welded seams. Much rust, inside and out, especially flaky on the inside. Soaked it in a dilute phosphoric acid solution for about a week to remove the rust.
Pressure tested it. Nine leaks, 5 on bottom, 4 on top. MIG welded the pinholes, burned through except on the lowest heat setting and quick release on the trigger.
Not much material left where the welds had been ground down on top.
I'm building a rat/bitsa style cafe so I'm repairing it and not sending it back. For anyone that's building a pretty Commando I'd say pass on the Indian stuff. It's probably all coming out of the same factory and being sold under different names.

Ouch...

Nuff said.

Where is a good place to purchase better tanks and side covers?

I tend to buy a lot of gear via ebay and there aren't many sellers that supply repro tinware.

I'll probably buy a good secondhand tank and side covers.

Sidecovers are available new from Andover. Tanks are still a tough one.
