Hi,
I have been keeping an eye out for OEM steel interstate tank but as they now seem to be few and far between, I am reluctantly considering an Indian made tank (unpainted)
Which brings me to my question - does anybody on the forum have any experience with this ebay seller and his interstate tanks?
  • vintage_classic_parts44 (427)
  • 99.4% positive feedback The seller has good feedback, but I would be really interested to hear from anybody that has first-hand knowledge. Thanks 🤔

I bought an Indan made tank and sidecovers from a different Ebay seller. The holes for the sidecover bolts were not in the right place and had to be redone. I had to tap the holes in the tank for the bolts for the mounts. The gas cap hole didn't quite fit a stock Norton gas cap...

That's exactly what I am concerned about - the seller has good feedback, but I would really like to hear from someone that has purchased off this particular seller.

Personality after a review of the feed back ...I think you have been too kind...and I reckon you could do better from another Indian tank manufacturer ...im sure more will chime in..

I had the same problem trying to locate a factory Interstate tank and finally ordered a painted tank from India. The paint job was very acceptable but when I went to fit,all 4 mounts were wrong and I had to cut the slot for the steering back 3/8” so the forks would not hit.All this doubled the price of the tank. I don’t remember what vendor I used but others have had better luck.Tank has been good since but whoever you go with, ask for a picture with dimensions for the underside showing mounts, etc.Good luck

Thanks Mike do you recall Royal Choppers by any chance ?...the photo with ruler dimensions communication is a great idea...cheers

There are a few reputable indian tank manufacturers. On the advice of a fellow member I sourced a custom alloy tank for my spitfire project from Royal Choppers, the finish and build quality is good, welds are clean and it does not leak. I anticipated issues with mounting alignment, though, and I ended up fabricating new mounting brackets. Overall quite happy with the tank.

Thats one Big Plus thank you 👍

Shane,
I really wish I could remember who I got the tank from but Royal Choppers seems to get the most positive reviews. The guy I got mine from said that it would fit perfectly if I had an Interstate frame!

I would also love to get my hands on an original interstate tank but as you say they rare as here in NZ.
Would be happy to get something from india that isn't made out of used oil drums and has a reasonable chance of fitting without too much drama.
The link I posted from ebay did look reasonable to me as it had photos with dimensions but who knows what would turn up? 🙄🙄🙄

I'm waiting for a reply from Royal Choppers requesting all mounting stud dimensions and confirmation of my other requests for their raw steel interstate tank.(page 8)..lets see what turns up from these guys..

I have purchased from Royal Choppers and recently bought a Roadster tank and panel set. The paint is nice but chips easily. You have to clean out the petcock taps with a tap and there will be debris inside the tank. The holes might not be in the correct position. What really upset me was the side panels as the mounting holes and bracket were a mile out and he blamed me for buying the wrong parts. You are better off buying originals and having Vintage Vendor paint them. Yes it's 3-4 times more expensive but the sting of the upfront cost is quickly forgotten when you appreciate the quality. You never quite get over the crappy quality of the cheaper Indian sets in my opinion. Signed - a bitter customer

Thread 'Rivet counter question about the Candy Apple colour scheme' https://www.accessnorton.com/Norton...on-about-the-candy-apple-colour-scheme.27115/

So this was my story of an Indian made tank but sorry it won't give you a vendor name because I bought it via a US company. Details in the thread.

The first part is about the colour. Tank details further down the thread.

In my case the actual tank shape was fine but as per normal I needed to have work done repositioning the taps, fixing the mounting for the cap and widening the tunnel to clear the wiring head steady etc. The metal is thicker than the original.

The whole exercise tank sidecovers seat including the NZ paint job cost a fortune which I'm too embarrassed to repeat. But more than the bike cost new.

I can’t speak for the Interstate pattern tanks but I recently purchased an Indian made tank for the G15 in order to get a bit more range. It’s a G12 pattern tank and appears to be reasonably well made, but the threads ar all over the place- SAE for the tank mounts, but period petcock screw in, and the knee pad inserts were metric. I still haven’t figured out the emblem screws.

The mount locations appear to be near enough and it wasn’t too hard to fit. The gas filler is shit and it needed a bit of reworking to hold a cap.

But for $225 delivered to Alaska, I feel hard pressed to complain. It was an eBay sale via “autocollectionspares”

Would dearly love to get my hands on an original interstate tank but they seem to be made out of unobtainium these days...... 😢
