Well today, the weather being as it was, I decided to fit my new Improved Amals. ( Chrome slides, stayup floats,Idle jet mod, stainless allen screws.)
I knew the old ones weren't too bad, as the bike ran quite well, but wouldn't hold a consistent idle.
Rather than fit the new (second hand) Carbies straight up, along with the rebiuld, I decided to run the
engine in a bit first because I knew the old ones were acceptable for now.
The old slides are marked badly, and inside the carby is also quite worn.
I recieved two sets of Needles, and two sets of Spray tubes.
The standard 750, and the later 850 notched spray tube and four ring needles.
Now theoretically, All I've done is fit two nice tight Carbies, that now have changeable Idle jets.
I did fit the 750 spray tubes, the same as the ones in the old Carbs...
Bolted them up and set about fitting the Slides and Needles.
Well guess what,.... the old Carbs had the four ring Needles in them.? (SEE PICTURE ABOVE)
They're not sposed to be interchangeable.. Are they.??
According to an article by Mr. Alan Goldwater... 8/12/03. per the INOC (I think) news letter.
Well I thought,...They were OK before, lets give em a go.
It stated and ran smoothly within 30 seconds, once the idle speed was set it idled cleanly, cold. But air screw in 1/4 turn.
I'm not convinced it's right just yet, but the fact that it idled, cold, suggests it's close, certainly not lean and
no puffs of smoke, so not rich. No flat spot to detect upon revs, but again not covinced yet, as the slides are # 3 1/2.
Perhaps the combination works ?
Any advice here is much appreciated, as I'm a little concerned about taking it out on the road.
Thanks ...AC.
