Hi, Im currently building a Triton, with a T110/T120 motor, and im looking for some advice on what road to go down in regards to ignition ect.

The bike is a Alternator/Magneto set up, Now my magneto isnt sparking at slow speed, only at high, the cost of a full magneto refurb is a little scary!
Im wondering if theres any electronic ignitions, that dont need a battery to run..
Ive also seen "battery Eliminators" around and about, do these work along side electronic ignitions?

My main issue is keeping it simple, idealy id like No battery (they look crap, and its another thing to fail)

Any help/Advice would be much apprechiated!

steve.

Sparx makes an electronic ignition that works with their own solid state regulator/rectifier with built in capacitor; no battery required.

You biggest problem is the T110 bottom end that you'll need a converter for the magneto. It cost about the same as a competent mag overhaul, and is just a shell with driveshaft to the EI rotor.

Joe's V-Cycle is well repected and reasonably priced for mag repairs, tell him Born Again Bikes sent you.

If you live in UK, send your magneto to Tony Cooper. It really is the simplest way to reliable ignition. It cost me £140 four years ago. Don't know what he charges now.

Thanks for the reply's, im probably going to stick with the mag, just wasn't sure if there was any better option, peoples opinions seem to be keep the magneto, so ill probably stick with that.

Mags are expensive to overhaul!

A good mag overhaul is about half the cost of a refurbed replacement, and even less than half the cost of a new one.

Save up the $$$ and buy a new Joe Hunt to replace your old maggie and you will never look back, I had a Joe Hunt on my triumph for 9 years and never touched it, started first kick every time and I done 250,000 ks on it, just pull the front cover off it every 6 months to lub the felts and check the points, but I never even replaced the points in those 9 years.

I've had pretty much identical success...

doug wood is the man for lucas magneto rebuilds - yeah you could get a hunt -their great if you like some weird thing hanging off your bike, but if you want to retain the look of the original maggie and yet have it perform waaaaay better talk to Doug (he's done 3 for me alone and my preunit triumph has over 20K on it with no problems)

I like the looks of them hanging off the side of my bike as well they are out in the cool air which makes them run cooler and I think that why they are so reliable and out last any other ingition system, but then thats my thorughts and thats why I didn't hasate to spend the money on a Joe Hunt for my hot 850 Norton.

Theres good & bad with the hunt, the good is : they work great!! The bad is , not everyone likes the look, and the cost. Electronic ignition is a good option, but be aware, when they fail, your done, no limping back home, a mag tends to fail slowly over time, or only when hot, or difficult to start, but will normally get you home. Rebuilding your original mag, if done correctly should last you the rest of your life with normal maintenance. I rebuild mags as a sideline, go to these guys website for very detailed instructions, you can do most of the work yourself and save some money. PM me if you have any questions at all, help is still free !!!!!

Skip,
thanks for the info on capacitors. We have an 880JAP with two BTH mags on it. It's a real bummer if they give up at a race meeting.

So a smart operator would take along a spare to the race - just in case ?

After 37 years of ownng my Norton I have had troubles wth the orginal points, gone through 3 sets of electonic ignitions and they have all let me down far away from home and of course the replacement of batteries, we all spend lots of money on our Nortons to keep them at their best, we spend lots of money on our engines, transmissions, frontend upgrades, brake upgrades, carbies upgrade etc etc, the list goes on, so to spend a little bit of money on my Joe Hunt was one of the best improvements I have ever done for my Norton, and the best part about that is no more worries about the battery being flat or faired completlely, I don't even have a battery on my Norton no more.

I have brought a new Triumph Thuxton just over 2 months ago and the poor old Norton has sat idle in that time, the other day I checked the oil, turned on the fuel tap and on the 3rd kick she fired up, it took that many kicks because I got too use to the electric start on the Truimph  and not having to worry about a battery being half flat, some say you don't have a advance unit in the Joe Hunts, so what I have never had any problems without one, it starts easy, will produce a big strong spark always through the rev lines, from very low revs to very high RPMs, I can't fault it, am I happy with it, you bet I am, like I said at the beging, its one of the best improvement I have ever done and it works so well with all the other improvements I have done to my Norton over the last 3 years.

What I don't understand is why didn't someone build a Joe Hunt style magneto into a 3 point mounting system like the original Lucas K2F type magneto ??

Best of all worlds ?
