Went out to the vintage m/c show and swap with some buddies on saturday. Very hot day. No probe with my bike, although one of the panheads sheared the hub bolts off inside the drum! Any way... nice long ride and I was beat when I got home. Parked ol trudie and enjoyed the rest of the weekend lounging poolside. This morning I walked out into the barn and there was a very large puddle of gas on the floor under the bike. I left the fuel tap on!!! Wound up draining 4 1/2 QUARTS of fuel out of the sump and another 1 1/2 out of the primary! Arrrgh! Kids... remember to shut your gas off!!! Cleaned out and resealed the primary and went ahead and shot some ATF down the plug holes for good decarbon and lube the cylinder walls. Letting it sit in the sun a bit before I fill primary and try to start her up.

WHATTA MAROON!!!

Hey, I forget all the time. I have to have a check list in my pocket or I'll forget to turn off the ignition. That usually drains the battery and the engine gets hot.

Got her all cleaned out and fired up. Blew a bunch of smoke from the ATF for a bit but she's running fine. Ill get a few miles on her tonight and then im off to work in oregon for a couple weeks. Will change the oil and filter when I get back.

Last I knew the bike was in jail. Glad it is out and on the road.

FWIW...yeah, you should turn off the fuel but when you forget the float needles should shut it off. Just something else to do when you get back. That or take the bike to Oregon and ride it while you are there. Didn't I see a post that you work in the Klamath Falls area? Some really sweet riding in that part of the world. Or was it Redmond? Still...

Yah, she's out. Cost a pretty penny though! Im working in Prineville, big new Facebook facility. Wish I could take her up there! Beautiful country, lost of good roads. Unfortunately if doesn't fit in the commuter. Otherwise I would. Have a feeling ill be sitting in the hotel a lot, wishing I was riding. Oh well.
She ran great tonight. Rode with some sport bikes and held my own. Up to over the ton fine, but they killed me after that. Got em in the turns though!

Glad you retrieved her. Not a bad habit to step on kicker to leave jugs near TDC to stifle the wet sump some. A place to be, something to do and things to look forward too.

It got to be such a habit since my first Triumph, for me, that I still shut off the gas on everything I've had since. My Harley, my ATV, friends bike's I ride, heck, back in the day that's how you shut off a Cat scraper. Nowadays you can walk down the line of bikes at on Main Street in Sturgis...there won't be one petcock in the Off position.

Chris, sounds like you got Amal Concentrics on the bike? If so, probably worth upgrading to the new Stay Up Float kit from Burlen Fuel Systems. They're making a range of improvements to the Concentric like anodized slides and even a whole new Concentric called the Premium. Be careful with the choice of rubber / viton tipped float needles if you use E gas that can degrade those. I understand the new float kit includes a aluminium needle to obviate that issue.
Irrespective of whatever make of carb, there is no substitute for turning of the taps.

Mick

The taps have to work too, I drained a whole tank of avgas from a constant drip overnight, luckily, it all evaporated in the float bowl. The needle valves should work, you can tell if you have gas coming out of the carbs by just turning on the taps. Both should be fixed, big possibility of fire and we don't want that. If you need to know how to fix either the taps or the needles, let me know, I can steer you there.

Old sloppy 932's. Guy at the show had new for $175 each. Grabbed his card. Ill prob go that route. Seems a tradeoff with relsleeve downtime, and expense. Flatslides sound good though! Hmmm. Where's my credit card?

Mainly its the slide that crap out so my next buy are the brass or bronze plated kind.
Might do a web search to see the price range. British Spares in NZ did me a good deal back when exchange rates helped me.

huh? ugh, hoped someone would point the good ones out. Saw recent reference to some but Trixie saga distracted me to act on it then. INOA rally coming up so will hold off to see what I find and learn there, knowing the online bunch might be 10 % of the global active Norton population. Past chrome versions flaked into intakes and may still be some about but don't know how to tell.

Subject line fooled me, as I thought it'd be more about how not to dribble on the finish and how much space to leave to avoid road weeps on the finish and gas smelling hands. Last two rides out I stuffed a clean red shop rag down behind headlight and a big paper towel in pocket. Used rag to wipe yellow/orange fat bug splatter off sunglasses and face to see out that side and some handling smudges on tank/covers. Paper towel to get off oil weeps and dust piles once out in paved over places with people about. Its an art I try to get as much off as fast as possible with the least amount of paper.

I'd hold out for the new Amals, as soon as they make them in 32mm.

Just curious where you ride. I'm 30-40 miles away in Brentwood if you're in Lodi.

Mostly around Lodi. Get up to the hills a bit. Valley Springs, Angels Camp, Mokolemne Hill. If I want to go.on a nice quick fun ride Ill go around Comanche reservoir. A good day ride would be up to Big Trees and back. For the most part though I just ride round out in the country East of Lodi. Lockeford / Clements area. I go out towards the delta a bit too. Justie's and Al the Wop's. Fosters in Rio Vista. Crawdads in Isleton. But the roads are pretty choppy. 12 just sucks, and 160 is pretty but rough. Don't go west on 4 much. Mostly go east. Next time your my way, hit me up. Except for the bugs, its a good place to ride.

Dave! How's it going bud? Yah, sounds interesting but when? I can probably make it through the summer, but why? $350 plus shipping from Visalia ( almost so-cal) and half a day and im done. That includes cleaning up the petcocks. The reserve doesnt work at all! Sucks to run out of gas when there's still a quart or so in the tank! Im interested though will be following the progress.

How's the bultaco? Been doing trials? Talked to my hodaka uncle. Turns out he was supposed to go to crooked river, but funds were lacking. Im staying in Madras this time around, there's a rodeo in p-ville so all the rooms are taken. Sure is nice here this time of year.

No more trials until the National in August. If you're around that is a can't-miss.
