How essential is the air filter Venturi?

My mk2a has the plastic air filter as fitted to the later mk3. The previous owner has removed all of the internal filters that I have now replaced bar these 2. I see they are listed by AN and I don’t have any fitted, are they needed? I have a feeling they were removed by the PO to try to resolve a carburation problem that I have sorted.

Never seen them fitted, doubt most owners replaced them after the first service. My MK2a runs fine without, I run peashooters 260 mains and the needle lifted one notch.

Definitely not needed.

They were probably an attempt at noise reduction which included mechanical and intake as well as exhaust in the U.S. at that time.
