I am trying to obtain the correct cush drive hub for my drum brake roadster. I posted moths ago that my 71 was outfitted with a bolt on drum.

I recently purchased a cush drive hub and tonight I realized the overall width of the bolt on is considerable wider than the cush drive. Unfortunately I don't know the year or model of the bike that the cush drive was from.

As you can see the old hub had a much wider overall width.

My questions are;

Are all cush drive hubs standard or do they vary by year and model?

If they are not standard, is there a range of years that will fit my 71.

Can I space this cush drive hub to work on my 71 and what does it entail?

Thank, Gary

Here is my educated guess. The swingarms all have the same inside width. Your bolt up hub incorporates the 3rd bearing that is in the sprocket and drum of the cush version. Get yourself the rest of the cush drive parts and bolt it in. my 72 combat and 74 850 use the same cush drive rear wheel parts. This should work fine for you. You need a cush drive sprocket and stub axle and rh axle.

The difference is in the Brake drum, you need to get the later drum with the internal bearing, easy ID as where the three locating dowls are no longer threaded and have flat sides.

It looks like I may have been lucky this time considering the variety of changes on these bikes. I had looked at the Old Brits schematics and the drum looked similar from 72 to 74, but I needed verification.

I knew the brake/sprocket would need to be change out but I didn't realize it housed another bearing! Makes sense considering the smaller support area on the hub.

I am not sure who reduced the size of my photos but thanks, I thought I had that taken care of prior to posting.
Thanks Boys!

Some hub and brake part numbers were changed [Edit: on the '74 hub assembly].
However I don't think those part number changes affect the interchangeability of the '71-'74 rear hub/brake/wheel assemblies (unless anyone knows different?).

You must have done that all by yourself - because we didn't! :)

Gary, in the case of Photobucket you can choose the upload size of the image by clicking 'Customize Your Upload Options'. Those pic's look like 320x240, maybe that's the default. Any other service probably has the same options.

T95, I know it's been 5 years since you posted all this but I'm now in the throws of it. I've got a 70 year model. It did not come with a rear hub so I obtained one, just like the one on the left in your pics above. It's the cush drive. I've wrangled with it a lot now and have given up on getting it to fit properly. The wheel is offset to the left and the parts are very tight in the swing arm. That said, I'm wondering what year model they started using the cush drive??? Was in on the 70 year model or was it one like the other picture, wider??? Can anyone help me understand?
