I’m currently rebuilding my mk 3 Commando. Whilst sat having a beer tonight chatting to the Mrs in the shed, i look at the bike and notice this hole, I’m guessing there should be a nut and bolt or something.can anyone confirm please. The engine was on a stand when we collected it, so haven’t noticed it until now.....

Thanks Eddie I thought as much. The hole doesn’t look to line up any where near where the
stand was attached,I suspect it was on the stand Norman had it on and when he transferred it
onto mine he forgot to fit the the stud, which of course now won’t go in without tipping the engine forward, which means I have to take a whole load of stuff back off to do it, needless to say I’m not best pleased

You might be able to remove the thru bolt from the front iso mount and undo the head steady to get the engine to drop enough to get a stud through there.

The stud will go through from the timing side provided no nut or washer. The primary case on the other side will make access difficult.

Primary case is off at the moment, but it’s the frame that looks to be in the way.

I do not have a Mark 3 but could someone reply saying just what exactly goes in that hole and is it really necessary that
a bolt doing what has to go back into it, as it could be a largely worthless exercise otherwise

It's a case fixing stud, I'd say a pretty important one too. Some kits included a bolt in place of the stud. As noted above, removing the front ISO stud and the head steady will allow access

As mentioned already, a case stud goes in there, clamping the two halves together, giving rigidity to the cases and keeping the two mating faces firmly clamped together. Given the status of the build currently, leaving it out is not an option IMHO.

06.2663 - CRANKCASE BOLT 5/16" UNF x 3 3/4" - 3.14 £ excl. VAT

My Mk3 was weeping out the ends of this thru bolt, just a tiny amount.
You might consider sealant.

Help please.......

It can be a bolt or a a double-ended stud (nut on each end). It is important - holds the crankcase together!

Really close but goes through on the ‘70 750 S I’m playing with this week. Stud that is. A bolt head or nut on the stud will not clear.

leave it out then you won't have to use fake oil leak patch under your Norton as you will have the real thing (as most people think its not a British bike without oil leaks;))
