Hi all,

I purchased a headlight bulb from my 1973 MK2A from Old Britts and it is the wrong one. For some reason they won't exchange it for the correct one. I've never seen this type of bulb on a Commando before. I am assuming it is off a later model. Please can someone confirm. Also does anybody want to buy it from me? (I have not touched the glass on it as i know that is bad for a Halogen bulb). Here it is:

That type of bulb base is what we would refer to in the UK as a P43t, which is now a far more common bulb than the P45t H4 type fitted to late Lucas motorcycle headlamps.

P45t.

As far as I know, there was no standard Commando headlamp that used the P43t, however, many aftermarket headlamp units use the P43t bulb.

An adaptor ring is available that allows a P43t bulb to be used in the P45t reflector.

[Edit] Some Commando headlamps may take P36d (370)/P36t (463) bulbs?

I must make a slight correction to that, because it would appear that headlamp reflectors on the later continental European model Commandos used a type '472' bulb, and 472 is the same as P43t,-apparently.

I'm pretty sure my MKII came with the old Lucas 'pre-focus' 45/50 watt bulb. I had to change the socket to fit a Halogen lamp. That was a loong time ago.

Which I think would have been the P36d or 370 type bulb?

did they say why they wouldn't take it back. I've dealt with them a lot and they seem reasonable

Most part suppliers wont take returns on small electrical items such as globes etc. its just something you have live with..

I think a lot of parts suppliers refuse to take back consumable items such as bulbs and spark plugs etc.?

However the fault appears to be with them, as they don't even list a type 472 bulb for a 1973/74 model Commando. They only list the 370 tungsten bulb.

It's interesting to note that certain components on their list are either not available, or have had their identities changed?

Items listed as:
[31]410 Not available
[32]411 ALLEN BOLT SETS
[37]463 CAMSHAFTS,HI-PERFORMANCE
[39]472 Cable End, Barrel Type, No. 47-2

-should all be various bulb options (410 Continental, 411 France, 463 Q/Halogen, 472 Continental Q/Halogen) according to the parts book?
