The two 5/16 studs at the front of the barrel have different length threads on each end one is about 12mm and the other end is about15mm, mine have unscrewed with the nuts and I found one of the studs had the long threaded end in the barrel and the other had the short threaded end in the barrel. which is correct? I would assume the 15mm length is the one that should be fixed into the barrel.

come on guys you can't all be out riding your bikes surely someone there has a dismantled 850 and can measure the length of the threaded portion of the 5/16 studs at the top of the barrel.Please. I want to loctite in my studs and don't know whether to put the short threaded end or the long threaded end into the barrel.

I would say the more threads in the casting/case the better. That would be my first inclination.
Second, with the studs 15mm side threaded all the way to where the threads stop, there should be enough thread above the base to take advantage of the deep nuts.

Whether these thoughts are what the consensus would agree with or not, I cannot say, but it make sense to me.

That being said, my threads seem to be 15mm proud of the base.

Short thread end goes in cylinder, long is for nuts. That's fairly standard practice for things like cylinder head studs.

+1
There is a dome radius on one end that is for the longer nut end.
