I suppose it all come down to space below the knuckle when it's fully at the end of the stroke. You mentioned you need 40mm movement at the toe piece, but remember that can be reduced by changing the lengths of the two linkage arms.

Even sadder cliffa is that, I've been mulling over your proposed idea for the "under" approach ever since you made it and, I think I've an idea that might make it work.
I think both the gear lever and linkage can work "under".

I've never really liked that "loop over the top" look anyway. Functional though...

The jigs, drawings and DXF files are available to anyone who might want to make their own (or more) though.
This was purely an exercise in doing something for me - because I wanted it and thought it was possible.
