Does anyone know the grade of steel to use to make new barrel/crankcase studs for a hybrid engine, I could buy some b50 ones and cut them back and re thread
Or make my own so I need to know what grade to order ? Maybe en9 ?
Cheers

There is nothing wrong with the OE studs; considerably less expensive to purchase a new set, saves a ton of time, however if you are bent on making you own you may want to visit this link:

A bit of history and a view of what ARP is making high stress engine fasteners out of.

Best wishes

The reason I am asking is because I can't buy the length I need off the shelf
Thanks for the info
Cheers

I would advise not to cut the threads with a die, thought you might get away with it. you would be better of getting the threads rolled, which involves no cutting like a die cut and is stronger.
High tensile steel rod is available off the shelf of most metal supply merchants – thought some will only supply by the metre.

Yes I see what you are saying, were the threads rolled on the original studs would you know?

The parts book that I have only mentions the short studs in the head ( EN9) and the rocker adjusting screws (EN14B) as special materials. No note on the cylinder studs. You need a Rockwell hardness tester...

If the parts book does not reference a special steel then they are normal steel, BSA uprated the stud diameter when they went B40 to B44 but the bottom thread remained the same.

Maybe this site could machine some from steel for you or the right grade of stainless to match the strength.
