I'm flumuxed....as usual.

What makes the points open and close on the DBD34 magneto?

I took a photo, but can't figure out to attach it here.

OK. Added a pic of the the points as my avatar. Ha. Anyway, the yellow arrow is pointing at the nut that provides the gap between the points, but what causes the points to open? I've rotated the bloody thing round and round, and can't see how it works. Is it the pin the red arrow is pointing to?

Thanks for any enlightenment. Much is needed.

It looks like you got it right. I believe they call that pin a tappet, made out of non-conducting fibre. Behind the points assy is a face cam. Think of the face cam as a wavy potato chip, with a high spot and a low spot. As the tappet passes over it, the cam raises and lowers the tappet and thus opens and closes the points. Good luck, I just adjusted mine a couple of months ago.

That's what I figured, but it does not seem to open the 'outer' points half. When the apparatus is rotated, at what point in the rotation does the tappet push the outer points half away from the inner half? Maybe if I knew where this was supposed to happen in the rotation I could figure out why mine does not seem to operate correctly.
 
Don't know where the cam starts to open the points, my bike is not readily accessible right now. If you remove the screw opposite the points you should be able to remove the leaf spring and "top" point. You then would be able to push on the tappet and see if it is free to move. These things are easy to work on, they are designed for road side service. The first time I saw the inside of mine was 2 months ago when I adjusted them. I am no mechanical genius but I was able to get it sorted.

I seem to be missing the wavy plate that the 'tappet' rides on and pushes the points apart. I wonder where these can be had? I took it apart as far as I could and the tappet moves in and out. Now, I can't figure out how to get the rest of the apparatus apart so I can put in the wavy plate behind the bit that turns when the bike is running.
 
I have not dis-assembled my mag any further than I have described so I won't be any help with that. I do believe the advance cable attaches directly to the cam but won't swear to that. Walridge may have the parts you need, don't know for sure. They do have some parts and I think they have a Lucas mag service manual. BTW what exactly do you have? Lucas? Magdyno? BTH?

I am guessing that there is a screw under the leaf spring that attaches the assembly to a shaft.
 
There is a screw in the centre of the rotating points behind the outer half of the points which you remove to access it. Pay attention to the order the bits fit in. The points are mounted on a taper in the shafts but pull off easily (or should). The wavy washer is called the cam and is held in by a large circlip as it turns in the body under control of the advance/retard cable.
I'd be surprised if anyone would assemble a magneto without the cam though. Here'so a diagram which may help.
