I was tightening the fuel line fitting and the broke off flush with the tank, 1/2 gal gushed out. Tanks was full, luckily it happened at work and i was able to plug the hole while I removed the tank. I just received two new petcocks from Old Britts, I didn't like the looks of the old ones, looks like someone toghted them with pliers.

Been using Dowty washers here for yonks on all 4 bikes, never a problem (so far....)

/Steve.

likewise. Have been using dowty washers on 4 bikes and with the BAP taps for years. Never a leak. YMMV.

I noticed your list of bikes. I don't pay much attention to new motorcycles these days, but your Yamaha caught my eye, so I looked it up. Sub 400 pound motorcycle with 75 hp, six speed tranny, 11" dual front discs, all for less than $7,000. Pretty hard to beat, I'd say.

Using Loctite 567 Thread sealant will ensure a good seal. The Dowty washer is not reliable in that application.

I concur with concours. Dowty seals are problematic on threaded shafts .... sometimes they work, other times not. I think the success depends on how flat the surfaces are on both sides of the Dowty washer, and whether the elastomer part lands fully on the flat. If the elastomer gets into the groove of the thread, it will not seal.

I ended up using the sealing washer that it came with and thread sealant.

thanks for replies

Did I mention that this is the nicest handling bike I have ever owned? It just flicks effortlessly through the twisties. Oh! The acceleration from 4000 rpm up is hair curling. Not a good freeway cruiser, though. A lotta bang for the buck!

Its nice to see a lot more naked bikes, really tired of only seeing crotch rockets and cruisers on the showroom floor. FZ-09 is nice also,

I think the Dowty seals need a flat washer on one side to make them work. I always use a bit of silicon on each side anyhow and some kind of soup in the threads. I replaced my old EW taps with the BAP from OB, but really hate the way they look and feel. They also have rubber inserts in them like nearly any modern tap and the flow rate is pretty low, but undoubtedly plenty good. So I got some EW look alike from Clubman, but they're chromed, however they do look like the originals and still have the rubber inserts in them but have much better flow, pretty much like the originals. The also have a long thread with a brass locknut which my originals didn't have and would just have to be put on pointing the way they wanted. Just another option.

I did work on my old EW taps and got them working but I just can't bring myself to put them on, they still won't thread in and stop where I want them, the thread is too short for a locknut. Maybe if I had a just right fiber washer for them.

Im not sure about the EW petcock but the BAP should have on-off-reserve on both sides of the tank. The gas cap is on the right side and fills on that side first, when I refilled the tank after it was empty it took 1.5 gallons before it started flowing out of the right petcock. So when you switch to the left reserve side there is about 1-1.5 gallons still in the tank. Here's a past photo of me out of gas, I can still see and hear gas sloshing around, and yes I did tilt the bike over and four times to get it in the left reserve side.

Yeah, those Clubman taps come as a 'reserve' and not. But not both. I chose not to get the reserve. One side of the tank is reserve enough for me.
