I have a slight oil leak from the gearbox right side cover gasket and also the kickstart seal. I have the replacement seals and gaskets for the repair. Was going to wait for fall, but I am not sure how much is involved in removing the side cover. Does it require dismantling of the entire gearbox? If it is not too bad, maybe I'll do it now . Thanks in advance for your help guys. BTW - todays ride - one Norton, 50 Harleys - guess which bike everyone was looking at.............

don't worry the outer cover comes straight off once you get the lever(s) off. Putting it back on can be a little trickier- you may have to reach through the inspection cover to make sure your pawl spring is lined up right. Check the manual if you aren't sure what I mean

I find the real trick is getting that shaft from the ratchet plate to go into the roller on the operating quadrant. Sometimes it takes me a half hour and sometimes it just goes right in. Depends on how you're holding your tongue.

The selector quadrant goes on first in its inner cover bush and roller and then the cover is eased over selector shaft, k/s and spring, or is that what you mean. It's not normally that hard to fit?

Hope this might help. These are pics of the two bits you will end up with after you pull the cover off. (I used a single sided razor blade to help break the seal of the gasket between the cover and the case & the gear leaver to help pull off the outer case) I can guarantee no gear cogs will roll across your garage floor after you pull the outer cover off. Just to let you know where I stand, any further into the gearbox is Voodoo and black magic to me.

Notice the heavy rust on stuff above oil level. When I put it back all cleaned up I spray paint em, usually in clear coat to keep em that way a longer time.

Love this. Mine stuck in fourth gear this weekend. I haven't taken it apart yet, but I'm pretty sure that is the spring I'll find broken.

Good tip Norton46, never heard of Boesheild before. I know Hobot swears by running ATF in the trans, Castrol has AS Special ATF, apparently gives of a gas when cooling down that forms a protective layer on moisture exposed metal.
Case IH developed ATF is even better, has better gas protection and higher moisture expellsion qualities, 85w 90 in a trans and 25w 30 rating when placed in a hydrualics. Strange how the same oil can have two different ratings, but different formula is used for different applications. FWIW

Thanks to all for your help - I will remove the cover and replace gaskets / O rings ASAP - since it does not involve complete gearbox disassembly - it is the only significant leak i have - I know that a new Barnett clutch was installed by the previous owner , maybe the gasket wasn't quite right. Thanks again guys!
