Hi
I want to have my 850 gearbox overhauled. Anyone from Oz know of a reliable, trustworthy and experienced person who can do it. I'm looking for someone in Brisbane but I don't mind if they're further afield. We use to have a couple of shops in Brisbane that could do this but not now. I know of one in Perth and another in Sydney but it'd be good to have a recommendation.

Thanks

There's a lot of Commandos on the road in Perth rebuilt by Murray Chamberlain of Cycle Craft Engineering. He's been doing it for a long time and knows his stuff. We're lucky to have him.
Freight maybe a killer though.

I've seen some of his work. Looks very good. It don't mind paying the freight if it means getting a good job. I might contact him anyway.

Cheers

I just finished rebuilding a Norton gear box, I have done a few over the years, I'm not a shop, but I know what I am doing, it all depends what is worn inside the box and what needs replacing, 39 years experance working on my Norton and a few mates and now after finishing work I am going to start up a small business just working on Nortons.

Give this guy call. One of the best Brit bike engineers in Australia. Does beautiful engine work. If he wont do it, he will now who can. He's only 1 hr away from you.

Been a great response. I've got a few leads to follow up now.

Thanks all

Norton gearboxes are very easy to work on. Am happy to help you out if you are keen to get your hands dirty. If you are dead set on getting someone else to service it then Kelly cork is very notable on east coast Australia. He is in maleny.
Again if you are keen, I'm in the city and they are simply the easiest gearbox to cut your teeth on

Try BJs. They are in QLD, long time British bike shop. Owner rides his Commando daily, knows what he is doing.

BJs are out sorcing there work , their prices are to high and their parts are over priced, I have been dealing with these guys for 38 years and only go there to buy small parts, Chris never smiles, Preston is a great bloke and always good to talk to but just heard he had a bit of a heart attack and will be off work for awhile, this is the same shop that wants $2,700 for a Atlas motor with unknown condition inside of it, but they always have the parts you need in a hurry.

I agree with Dkt26. These are easy gearboxes to work on. Getting it out of the bike is the hardest part.

What's wrong with it ?

I rebuilt my 850 g/b without removing it from the bike. The only tricky part I found was getting the selectors back in with the bike upright. Would be easier if turn on its side. You do need oxy acetylene to help remove and replace the main bearings outer shells though.
