I posted about this in my Commando Thread but it didn't get any attention there.
My Commando gearbox is leaking pretty badly from the two bolts on the front of the box. I think they are the quadrant bolt and the camplate bolt.

Is it possible to replace the seal in these without dissassembling the box?

If so, what size O-ring's do I need to get.
Below is a pic of the ones that I mean.

Also, there is a bit of a leak from the O-ring at the gear selector shaft. Is that one also easily doable and if so what size O-ring would I need for that?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think either the quadrant or camplate would be disturbed if you removed the bolts (please say if anybody thinks differently)? [Edit] I think I would want to remove the outer cover and then find some way to lock the quadrant as I loosened the bolts?

The O-rings are of course available as replacement parts, but I don't have any handy so I can't give you the sizes.

The ones on the bolts should be able to be changed without taking the box apart, But the ones in the outer cover will require the cover to come off. You can go to OldBritts.com to find the o-rings and gasket you will need, There are two o-rings for the gear shift one on the shaft and one in the cover.

I've done it on a Mk111 where of course the quadrant is retained by a circlip. It's quite possible but fiddly and to be honest, if they're leaking badly then I'd suspect worn or loose bushes.

The gears will change until the limit is reached but the bolts shouldn't be too tight so I don't see a problem in letting that occur.

Is the box overfilled ? I wouldn't expect much oil up round the quadrant pivot ?

Hi Veefore.
I had the same prob with my box. I replaced the orings in the quarant, but cleaned all the surfaces and smeered the orings with loctite 515 before installing them. They stopped leaking.
As for the outer cover the best way is to take it off and see Murry at Cyclecraft Engineering at Whelshpool (93614619). He can arrange to have the cover machined to take a MKIII oil seal, he will supply the new seal also.

Brewer.

Thanks everyone. I am planning a gearbox stripdown, check and probably rebuild later this year but wanted to get it to stop soiling itself for the time being. I should have said that I knew the outer cover would have to come off for the gear lever seal but I don't really want to go any further than that at the moment.

I am going by Cyclecraft this afternoon after work (if he is open) so I will see if I can get some O-rings from him.
Getting the outer cover machined for the Mk111 seals seams like a good idea for later in the year.

I dont think he is open this arvo!
Best to call before you go to make sure they are.

Brewer.

You were right, he wasn't there. That is three times I have been there before 4pm and he hasn't been open. He is getting worse than Ben in Morley. I stopped going to him because I never knew when he would be there. Sometimes I would ring and he was say to come down. I would get there half an hour later and the place would be shut and he would be gone.

Ben will be in on Saturday. I understand what you mean, but there may have been other issues involved. Give him a call. Good luck with the leak.

Oh I understand Ben's issues and I really do feel for him. He is doing it pretty tough and seems a pretty nice and helpful bloke but it still can get annoying from a customer point of view when you have to make multiple calls and visits to a shop to get a part.

Sorry for another dumb question, but what size are the camplate bold and the quadrant bolt?
None of my sidchrome spanners, either imperial or metric, seem to fit.

Cyclecraft & Ben

Veefore, Brewer,Frank B I've always bought my parts from JCS or overseas. I was not aware of Cyclecraft or "Ben". I only go to Perth rarely even though I live in Bunbury. Are these two Norton shops? if so I certainly would prefer to support them than some one out of the state. Can you give me some info and contact/address details for these two blokes.

thanks

Neil

Veefore,

I think that you would find that the bolt hex size is 1/4 BSW, The same size as the cyl head Bolts, and the cylinder head/cylinder barrel nut. this nut is located near the carbies... and is screwed from underneath the barrel.
You know the one?
It would be wise to visit your local tool specialist to order at least one of these 1/4 BSW sockets and a ring/ combination spanners. and keep these in you tool box.

Thanks alot. I'll have a look around and see if anyone here has any. Otherwise I'll see what I can find on the 'net.

I managed to find a Gedore 1/4W spanner and a Konon(?) socket today. $64.80 for the pair. Got home looking forward to going to work on the gearbox only to find that they didn't fit. They are too damned big!

It is probably for the best anyway. A $53.20 spanner should be framed and mounted on the wall with a plaque underneath that says "They saw me coming!"

I called in and saw Murray today. He told me that the correct size is 3/16 whitworth.
As an aside, I also found out why he wasn't open for a while. He was in NZ on family business. I kinda feel a little guilty about getting p'd off with him now.

I don't know why, but Whitworth and BS fit the same nuts, but label them differently. For example, 3/16W is 1/4BS. Perhaps this is where you went wrong?

My wife bought me a set of 'Acesa' combination spanners from 1/8W to 1/2W and a set of 'Ko-Ken' 12-point sockets ranging from 1/8W-3/16BS to 9/16W-5/8BS for my birthday. I think the were about $70US and $55US respectively.

My brother-in-law also gave me a Snap-on combination spanner - 7/16BS.
He had gotten it in a garage sale years ago and never knew what it was until I told him about Whitworth/BS. Of course, nothing on the Commando is 7/16BS!

Veefore, you can't go wrong with a good quality 1/4" whit like a Gedore. You'll need one all over the motor. :)

Think of it as money well spent.
