A question for those more experienced on Commando gearboxes.
I am currently doing a complete rebuild of a 74 Commando 850 Gearbox. I noticed the "S" designation on the top of the gearbox after the SN #. Does this have any meaning or significance that I should be aware of.

Gearbox numbering

Thank you !

No.

I had a bike/gearbox with a number a few hundred less than that, don't recall an S.
Might even have a photo of it, will check. Sometime, since its not significant. !

Been rebuilding mine and havent noticed any odd markings. I purchased the gearbox DVD and there is no mention of anything different with the exception of I believe a Dominator gearbox, other than that the Commando gearbox should all be the same. DId yours have the portuguese bearing in it? Still waiting on my firend to get time to weld up stud boss and then can get my gearbox complete! BTW, if you dont have the DVD I highly suggest it, lots of good tips to get it right the first time!!

Mine has number 308396, and also an 'S'-mark. For what it's worth.

Also a 1974 commando 850.

The only thing I noticed on the bearings is that the Layshaft had a roller bearing. Not knowing the history I am assuming it was added later. I replaced the other two ball bearings.
Warpedscout, I was unaware there was a DVD, and will look for one. I am waiting on a layshaft 4th gear, and have put it together several times and all seems straight forward, but DVD would be helpful.
On this bike all the numbers match, , so still curious as to the "S" marking.
