I pulled the outer cover from my gearbox to replace a broken ratchet spring. I found an unusual amount of brass shavings inside. The outer cover only has one brass bushing and appears ok. Question is which bushings is this most likely to be coming from? I'm sure I'll have to dismantle the entire gear box to fix it, I just wanted a hint before I tore into it.

First gear bush does break up /crack at the outboard end for sure. Pull the inner cover and the evidence should be right there upon removal. Small delicate bush.

While you're in there I don't know if you want to go to the trouble to check the 4th main bushings. Sometimes they drift out and get chewed up too. Latest thing to do is put 3 of them in there. I also put a shim on the outboard side to try to keep the circlip from chewing up the end of it and used locktite on them. Mine was about 1/4 chewed up after 13K. Might consider it if you haven't seen the inside of the GB before.

Yep like they said to point I've learned to keep a spare 1st gear paper thin bush on hand as it 1st to go but once its gone bad the loads more transfered to other bushes, especially the sleeve set but in general I can get 2 1st gear bushes fitted before clutch wobble or shift dogs get too mis aligned to carry on. I've had two crashes when Peels 1st bush broke up unknown, she'd popped out of 1st gear drag about 20 mph down Mt d/t wise slow traffic in twisties * till rear slightly leaned tire hit a missing section of pavement patch so lost engine drag and next instant I was running a few steps to stand in mid land watching Peel slide a dozen more yds into guard rail. Learned my lesion so on way home 50 mile I stayed on good power play and forgot about it **till easing over to enter my cattle gate drive way at ~12 mph ** it poped out to speed Peel down hill too fast for the lean angle & lost rear end to land bike on my pelvis and fracture L5/Si fused from birth joint that took me 9 mo to walk upright like a man again but pleased in the end as regrew a new joint and I'd protected new $500 tank paint job. When ya do dig in deeper be sure to check shaft straightness as lack of bush support can let them bend. If shafts not dang straight guess what I found out wears out faster again till there are.
