Just added lube to newly rebuilt gearbox. It is now seeping out around the kickstarter shaft. Haven't started bike yet. Any praticular tweaks to make once I have the outer cover off for a look?

I removed the oring and placed a seal in there. No leaks at all from then on! I can look for the seal part number, NAPA auto parts had it too and it was cheap.

one of these is for the kick start, cant remember which one!

Gear box leak

If can wait or source this above seal or have the area machined for Honda seal then me and others have gotten oil tight KS by backing up the o-ring groove with cig box foil thickness the greased parts and RTV applied then assembled and left set up over night. Also if filled to level plug level then expect leaks till seeks its innate level.

I noticed the kickstart one didn't need to be machined but the gear shift one does... I chose to refit the shift one with a new oring and the leak there stopped.

Thanks Ice-T. I guess I could just take the o-ring in and see which of those two parts numbers is closest.

Aargh, I also filled the oil tank up and it has wet sumped. Not suprised at that but I now also have a leak from the breather on the back of the cases and I can see part of the gasket hanging down. Must have got it on crooked. Not an easy fix now with the gearbox in.

Ugh troubleshooting leaks is like smash a mole.

I cant count the amount of times I have removed the primary and stuff like that trying to get the seals and other stuff "right"....

Thanks for the help guys. I picked up a 9815 seal at NAPA and fitted it yesterday. No drips this morning. I also took the breather loose enough to remove the messed up gasket and get a good coat of Hondabond on there. I was afraid to pull it all the way off because I wouldn't have the space to get my fingers in there to restart the bolts. Appear's that leak has stopped too. Only seap I have left is from the swing arm. I tighten the little rod up so tite I snapped it and had to get a replacement. I thinking as long as I add some oil on a regular basis to keep the bronze bushing saturated, I'm not going to worry too much about this one.

I fitted this SKF seal but it is very loose in the gearbox cover. The area that is loose is the seal's metal ring to gearbox's aluminum cover.

Considering putting something on the backside of the metal seal to tighten it up. Or switch back to O-ring.
I am rather sure this seal will leak as-is.

Will see if the bush can go in anymore but I think not.

Anyone else have this problem with the SKF seal?

The seal was a tight fit. I have done 2 more and they both were tight. I had to tap them in with a socket. By the way the one I did 4 years ago has never leaked a drop.
Is the area where the seal fits a larger diameter than where the bush sits? As I recall they should be the same.
Might try another seal, maybe this one is a knockoff.

Another option used by some riders is to drill a small hole in the inspection cover. This hole should be very small like a #58 drill (.042"). Replace the inspection cover with the hole towards the top of the gearbox. This is an easy and cheap fix and safe, for if the cover starts to leak out this hole, a dab of silicone sealer will plug up the hole.

I did this one, and it seems to work.

The seal area is smaller diameter than the bushing.
Way too loose.

Does the new rebuild kit from Andover include a seal for the kickshaft?
06-7243?

Its not an o-ring but size looks correct.

Hi Chris.
Yes, yhe kit include the 040005 XRing.
But i fitted the SKF Seal and it was well tight into the outer cover case.
May be the previous owner machined it to fit a larger o ring?
If yes you can use the 06.6145 850 ES Seal but you must machine the outer cover case.

Thanks Piero. On my cover, the seal area is larger than the bushing area so maybe it has been modified.
Definitely do not need any tool to put in the SKF seal.

I have put teflon tape around the SKF seal and it is holding better.

If that doesn't work, I will just use the X-ring seal in the Andover kit.
