Living in vancouver, I am constantly surrounded by Greenies.
Many of them comment on how efficient and green my Commando must be.
I always just smile and nod agreeably, laughing into my sleeve.

I get about 50-75 miles per Interstate tank. How about the rest of you?

Something doesn't seem right here. An Interstate is 6.6 us gallons. 50 to 75 mile per tank would be 7.57 to 11.36 mpg.
Please revise your statement.

I get 100 to 150 per roadster tank. Aggressive riding will will cut that by 1/3.

Somebody is stealing your gas/petrol or there's a hole in the bottom of the tank?

I had a Triumph Hurricane (BSA triple) that I swear got less than 20 mpg. I ride my Commando like an old man now, and the gas goes on forever.

It not then it'd be so rich as not to start and if it did start would foul plugs in a few 100 yd same as riding with the choke on while tickling to flood. Wes and I got upper 40's lower 50's mpg last weeks 1000 mile loop. Some can even touch the 60's mpg on a Commando.

Why did I write Interstate when I own a roadster?

50-75 per roadster tank - ridden in city traffic.

Works out to about 35mpg.

Sounds about right for a slightly rich running set of Amals. Jim

70 mpg on a 600 mile trip , often at 80 and a good stretch at 100-110 . Ya gotta fit Mk2 Conc.s , :P :D

Are you talking about the distance from full to reserve, or from full to (nearly) empty? A fibreglass Roadster tank should hold around 2.7 US gallons and a steel Roadster tank holds 3.0 US gals. according to the riders handbooks which even working to the lesser 2.7 gal tank quantity it doesn't work out to 35 MPG at the quoted mileages.

I do a lousy job of keeping track of mileage but I figure I am getting about 40 to the gallon. Obviously those greenies have never stood in a garage with a running Commando. You just don't get fumes like that off a modern vehicle!

I allways keep track of my milage on rides and consistantly get about 45 mpg. Less if really ridding hard but if I got 50 miles a tank I'd be wondering who took it.

Well, me being nit-picky about MPG on any motorcycle I've owned ... this thread is great. The first Norton I had was a 1971 750 with a single Mikuni; it got about 33 MPG. :x ( and that it why I sold it) It was VERY fast and very smooth, top end about 105 indicated. (suspect it had a 19 tooth front sprocket.) All my other Nortons (750s and 850s) got anywhere from lower 40s to high 50s. My current 750 with a single Mikuni has gotten as high as 54 MPG :D ... but lately has been 43 to 46.

Now my 1999 Buell Cyclone (super fast and torquey) has gotten as high as 65 mpg :D but is currently getting 55 mpg :) ... so how does a bigger motor, with more HP, and more torque get such good MPG ??? Maybe a good thread to start on the "anything cycle related" part of this web site.

Peak of the tourque R.P.M. is the ' economic cruiseing speed . :D

So , if our cowboy cam's moved the tourque peak up a thousand , or fifteen hundred R.P.M.s ,
thats where the most economical cruiseing range is . minimum throttle setting for that gear .

On the flatlands and makeing the effort to slow down to walking pace , 60 m.p.h. , sightseeing
and inatention would have the needle at 80 m.p.h. the next time you looked . Fudge .

Though ' someone ' had fitted a 23 tooth gearbox chain sprocket .Wouldnt go over 22 for the road ,
without the 5 speed box .Getting away at the lights in cold wet weather gets to ' interesting ' , and
general rideing requires more attention . 4 th gear will have you over the limit in suberbia , as will
third most of the time .But if you enjoy cruiseing to work at 70 + , go for it .

47 city driving 56 freeway per US gallon on 750 with 34MM Mikuni VM.
New pistons, rings and fresh valves.

55 - 58 US MPG on my 74 850, MKI Amals. I think it could stand another notch up on the needle.

73-750, Single Mikuni, Mixed Highway, Country, City. 58 to 60 MPG consistantly. Use Highest octane available where I stop with 1/2 Ounce Marine Stabil and 1/2 Ounce Octane Boost added to each fill up.
