I use a 20 amp, USA rated fuse. The above .pdf file gives information on the different ratings.

What type of fuse is it?
The old Lucas blow rated type are usually 1-1/4" glass (not 1.0" glass).
Unless you bought it from a British bike specialist and it looks like the one below then it's unlikely to be a 35A blow rated fuse.

the ones I got are 1-1/4" glass
are they ok?

I would rather put in a fuse that was too "small" and blow it than put one in that was too big and melt my wire. Does the fuse have any printing on it? Maybe AGC or BUSS or both? If so it is probably rated for 35 continuous and too large a rating to protect your wiring.

Where or who did you buy them from?
If bought from a British bike or car specialist parts supplier then they may be OK, but unless you can be absolutely sure they are blow fuses then it would be unsafe to use them-as a 35A continuous fuse blows at approximately 70A, which is a level of current high enough to cause damage the bike's wiring.

this is what I found:
AGC
(311-3AG)
35A

AGC35BP
DAGCO35 VP

I would return to the store and buy the same fuse in 20 Amp. Or even 15 amp to be even safer. I am pretty sure those are continuous rated fuses and will carry a lot more amperage for short periods.
