I'm trying to remove the fuel tank on my 961 and I have Richard Coote's great manual. In the manual it indicates that I have to push in on a button on the fuel line connector in order to separate it from the tank fitting. My problem is that I can't find any button on the connector.

I'm I missing something here?

I feel your pain, man. The "button" is not as conspicuous as it looks in the photo. I had help from Richard P when I did it the first time. The second time I did it I knew where and how hard to press. I used a nail punch to find it. Good luck!

See where the tip of the lead pencil is in the photo? Simply push inward immediately to the right of the tip of the lead pencil in the photograph, on that small half-strip piece of plastic that runs vertically. It’ll push in a mm or two.. That’s it.

I would love to replace this connector with metal pieces as found on my Triumph. That would be a good winter research project, eh?

I tried pushing that dot that appears to the right of the pencil tip, but the connector never budged. I was concerned that I was pushing a mark left by a plastic casting process. It doesn't look much like a button to the eye.

I guess this is just another 961 piece that should be replaced with a proper part.

Thanks for all the help, I'll keep trying.

Once you figure it out you wont HATE this method. Its pretty standard on lots of cars.

You got It?

Try not 'loading/tensioning' up by already pulling away.

Leave the hose nice and close to tank connector then gently push in on that piece (indeed looks like casting artefact) and perhaps push from edge rather then pull from the hose bit.

I find that effortless.

And be prepared as some fuel will come out of hose so I prepare container/cloth/bag whatever is nearby.

The button is where the pencil is, half circle that pushes in ,pull at same time & then it clears the fuel spigot , When u push it back on u will here an audible click, so that’s means it’s fully home, & if u don’t hear it,it’s not fully locked on ,& once done you can see it is great device, because we can’t see a jubilee clip at first it does look a mystery.dont drop the tank like I did, fuel spigot snapped on fuel pump & that’s another thread earlier to get fixed

Took me a minute to figure out but I think its a good system. Oddly, I didn't lose any fuel. If I remember correctly, I pushed toward the fitting a little while pushing the button, then backed it off. Instead of a rag, I put several layers of the blue painters tape on the tank in case it made contact lifting it off. (off topic a bit) Took about 5 to 10 minutes.

Finally got the connector off.
I was pushing directly on the dot.
Turns out I had to push just forward of the dot, and connect easily popped right off.

Got a nasty squirt in the eye when I popped connector back on though.
That'll teach me.

Safety glasses son. Sorry for your experience. When you coming out for a north shore cruise??

Not for a while yet.
The battery died in my 961, so got to replace it. I ordered a new Yuasa online.
My consulting work heated up so I'm kind of busy right now.
If the weather holds up, maybe we can meet up next week for a run.

I'm also talking to dyno technician about installing a PC on my 961. He actually has experience with 961's, but it's not all good.
He will tell me next week if he's willing to do the work for me, and when.
I had an interesting conversation with him about the 961, it's issues, and his experience with it and the Norton guys in the UK.
