I have removed the front wheel to change the tyre and thought whilst it is off I will check the brakes. Not as straightforward as i thought. I need to remove the brake hub from the drum and my research leads me to believe, that I need to clamp the spindle and undo the large hub retaining nut - is that right? with that undone will the hub be free for removal and is there anything else I need to do to remove the spindle?

Matchless front wheel: The spindle does not normally come out without complete disassembly of the hub. The inner races of the tapered bearings are pressed up against shoulders on the spindle. Be gentle with the bearings if you take it apart and use an arbor press rather than a hammer. These bearings are hard to come by so you don't want to damage them.

New bearings are available thru most AMC parts suppliers for about $35-40 USD. (AMC Classic Spares, AMOC spares, both in UK)

Thanks for the advice, the bearings all sound good, so for the moment I think I will just leave the wheel spindle in.
