Hi people i,m having a wee problem with my front brake. There,s no more adjustment on the handle bars or the Brake drum. I've had the front wheel out and checked the the shoes and there fine. I have bought a new cable with the inline switch but still no good . HELP PLEASE.

Maybe you need some sort of hi-lift cams ??

madass, on this forum, supplies some tls type brake shoes/linings that are correctly arced to the drums ??

What do you mean no more adjustment? Too tight or too loose? Either can be fixed easily. If they're too tight, I'll tell you how to arc them. If they're too loose do you have new shoes and are the slippers on the ends of the shoes? #28 here http://www.oldbritts.com/1971_g17.html

Mine work great, but not for racing.

Thanks for the replies gents there to loose its like the cable may of stretched but i since bought a new cable.

So it's too loose. Are all your parts correct, do you have the adjuster gizmo on the front drum and does that take up any slop? Do you have the switch in the middle of the cable for the brake light?

Is the arm the cable attaches to (see DogT's photo) on the right way? I think it can go on two ways: one will make the cable slack, the other way will make it tight.

Have you replaced shoes lately? The Ferodo shoes I bought had too thin a lining right out of the box, no better than the shoes I replaced. Contact Madass on this board, he sells the proper thickness linings, or if your OK with your linings, shim the abutments on your shoes where they contact the cam.

As per my 1973 vintage factory workshop manual-

Should the adjustment run out at the handlebar and cable adjusters, providing the brake linings are examined to ensure that the rivets are not flush with the lining friction surface, the operating cam levers can be reversed to regain adjustment.

Just had to do this with mine the other day. It works but you end up having to look at the crappy finish on the back side of the lever.

Ferodo's Norton front brake shoe, 200mm. thats 1/8" smaller than your 8" brake. Ebay item 290898415669

You can just see the steel anti wear pads , here. Where it sits on the cam . Are they there .

Strip , clean , lube & reset ( This is ' overhaul , or Service Maintanance ) balance rod .
You dont just throw a set of shoes in , unless you wear em out monthly .

Things can get dry & tight & bind up . Better without the switch , if its a option .

My record for crashing at a race meeting was four times in one day - due to a drum brake which was wrongly set up..
