When I just brake softly my front disc (75 Commando) squeals like crazy. Squeeze harder and it goes away but returns again when I brake easily. Rotor or caliper?? Help, spring is coming.
Try putting some anti-squeal compound between the end of the piston and the back of the pads. It is sold for this purpose in automotive stores. I was told that anti-seeze is a cheap and cheerful substitute.

I found what looked like bare cast iron where the chrome was worn off, was actually polished rust. 1/2 hour in the lathe with emery cloth revealed the iron, MUCH BETTER results. YMMV
Mine was squealing like crazy. I used some CRC disc brake anti-squeal. Pretty simple . Take the caliper off. Push the pistons in as far as they will go. This probably won't let the pads come out but no problem. Squirt some of the stuff on the back side of each pad and then spread it around the back of the pad with a small screw driver. Leave the pads in the center of the caliper for ten minutes for the stuff to set up. Reinstall the caliper and no more squeals.
You can get universal anti squeal pads for cars from most car shops they are self adhesive pads you cut to size and shape clean back of brake pad an stick on. I have used them on cars and bikes for years and they are cheap and easy
