Why didn't Norton use sleeve nuts through the head on the two front barrel/head studs , like they used on the upside down ones.
would make access much easier when re torqueing the head down.
Thinking of getting some made, unless anyone knows of any availabilty or a reason not to ?
I understand they might interupt the cooling , but surely not that much ?

I have often thought the same thing.

Ever tried to get a socket over one of them front two nuts when a small rock has gotten in there. Last time that happened to me I thought I was going to have to remove the engine to get that little rock out of there. Finally I got a punch in the right place to crush the rock so I could blow it out. Jim

Pebbles and mud dubbers get in my way. Chewing gum on a wire or long thin nose forceps with tiny beak like jaws at the end sure saved me some swearing. Btw what does "spigoted" fastener mean for use in Norton cases or heads? I can't find examples or images in searches but for plumbing supply. Can a photo be shown of this? Ever think of an external way to help hold heads down?

This is how CNW did mine. FYI

I believe Sam was referring to the two front head studs. The two that are down in the fins and require just the right extension to get a torque wrench on. Jim

Yes, that's right Jim, and after yours and Ludwig's posts I'll be putting rubber grommets in the head to stop any foreign bodies getting in there, untill I get some sleeve nuts made.

After one of my studs snapped, I swapped them out for the next size up allen bolt. Nary a problem since.
