I got a 71 Commando as partial payment on a Sportster I sold. It went through a hideous chop job with extended forks. I'm looking for options for replacing them. I've seen a lot of UJM front ends put on different bikes. Any suggestions for what fits/works best? I'm on a budget (laid off) and have a few junkyards nearby, that's why I'm going this route. I've got access to decent shops for machining if need be.

Does the bike still have the original fork yokes and fork legs or was everything replaced?

Well, assuming the original dampers are still inside, I'd think it would be cheaper to find a set of used stock tubes and springs.
I bet some members here have such stuff cluttering-up their garages. It's possible you already have stock springs inside with long spacers added.
Otherwise I think I've got a set of stock springs you can have. That is unless you're really determined to install a set of UJM forks.
I would think it would be a headache to adapt UJM forks to fit the steering tube and the drum brake, axle, etc.

That would be fine, going back to stock. I was just looking at the possibility of swapping everything from the triple trees down and getting discs brakes as a bonus. I got a front end for a YZ project for 50.00. That came with bars, master cyl, levers, rim, and tire. Just looking for options right now. The bikes been sitting for years, time to do something with it. If it ever quits snowing I'll start tearing it down, make a list of what I need (lots), and start looking around.

there are a bunch of front end swaps but not much in the way of easy detailed info, prob gonna have to dig & mostly sort it out on your own, to go there

If you've got a good machine shop nearby the easiest option might be to have the tubes shortened. Any decent machinist could do it.
