Follower scar oil tests (2018)

From the results so far, it seems that it is more of case of 'avoid these oils' and the rest if used in the right climate and changed on a regular basis will suffice for the miles covered by many owners.

Other than Jim, and a very few others, the results are for oils that few have actually used for a period of years successfully, with engine strips to gauge the wear and condition of the parts. Next stage, the harder part is put the miles on the oil, we should all try and help in that respect. Jim is going for the best oil he can find and test, it is very possible that the road use of that oil may not deliver what was found in testing or be no better than an oil that that was found to be mid table in the testing, knowing Jim he will be well aware of this and watching for it.

Jim's best oil that he finds maybe absolutely no good for me when riding in the winter, if fact it could be worse than using a cheap thin oil. When all Jim's testing is done it would be nice to see the data put into a spreadsheet (maybe someone is already doing that from the graphs published) with top, mid, and avoid categories and the recommends for hot, cool and cold climate use.

Sadly there is much data out there, but the owners are not on the forum, many Commandos are still owned from new and one I know of has covered over 280K miles with the engine re-built every 80K miles, wonder what oil he uses?

Jim, Keep up the good work, it dispels a lot of the myths that have perpetuated in the past 40 years, Castrol GTX for an example, I know many who still use and swear by it here in the UK. And after 34 thread pages, not one person has queried the mineral / synthetic issue, I think the results you have published have firmly put that one to bed.

"many Commandos are still owned from new and one I know of has covered over 280K miles with the engine re-built every 80K miles, wonder what oil he uses?"

Apparently a faulty choice of some sort since it needed rebuilding after only 80k miles! ;)

A first effort to help me make sense. I went through the results. Please be aware quite a few of the summary results didnt match the graph as the temp had been taken as the load. Where i noticed i amended in the sheet. This follow is only indicative as the shape of the graph gives a much more comparable result. It would be better maybe to compare all the oils tested at 150 Lbs but my eye site i was unable to read of the graph to a suitable precision. Point system based on WSBK allocation. The following is comma deliminated, add to a txt file to open it up somewhere more useful like excel. Top chart is rank order with total points

your'll have to copy and paste all the parts above into one notepad file, save and change the extension to *.csv and it should open up ok in excel.

If you would want more complete data I can send you the log files. You can download Logworks from Innovate for free and see the graphs in real time. The selection tool will give you the numbers from any point in the graph. Jim

Hi Jim that would be great if you could pm and I'll email. I'll do the stats based on the levels at 150 lbs. Had requests for the excel, will look into using a public drop box or something so folk can easily grab it.

Not sure all the metric work totally and it may need some weighting applied. I thought max lbs divided by friction was a good indicator as the higher the max and lower the friction the bigger number. The ratios being a nice indicator combined with the Max values of how it's performing.

Jim, in your assesment of redline 60 you discount it for road use as it is non detergent.. Back in the day -the 1960s and before it was common practice to decoke on an annual basis here in the UK. And I remember my BSA 650 would be utterly filthy in the rocker covers and behind the timing cover. It was run on first generation multigrade gtx or duckhams so definately detergent.
The commando in contrast ,despite being run on low and non detergent monogrades is always clean, The head gets pulled very rarely , and then to change springs and maybe to reseast valves .Carbon build up is mi nimal.
The difference between now and then I attribut to the fact the you cannot get leaded petrol with an additives package in the Uk now. Dirt in engine oil is surely a product of combustion and now it seems to be very clean.. Not so good for those who want the ragged performance edge but at leasts one seems to get a clean burn
With a watercooled engine at low temp and risk of sludge formation , yes I can see it , but with hot air cooled engines surely its not a big deal

You may be right, I have not tried it with a Norton.
I was more afraid of the lack of base additives causing a buildup of acid.

My experience with non-detergent oils comes from the 60's and removing valve covers from V8's that had run non-detergent.
You could not see the valve train after removing the cover and you could read Ford, Mercury or Pontiac in the buildup that was under the cover.

Check out these scar tests that were made with readily available synthetic oils. What's interesting is that you can see the actual scar created with each oil. Page down and compare the various scars of Royal purple, penrite and Vavoline durablend.

I had one of those scar testers once.

I really did not see the point of how big the scar was. I wanted to know what did best at preventing the scar.

An interesting test article Jim. Interesting to see how highly they rated a Royal Purple.

Yeah, oils with a lot of friction reducer do very well in that type of a test.
WD40 mixed with STP looks great with that test. But try it in your engine and see what happens.

Follower scar oil tests (2018)

Sweet, can you link to the xls? The graphic is not.clear on my dumb phone.

FWIW, my mother's family name is Jungles, from Oslo.

The photobucket pics do not work very well, working on getting the excel available for all. This now contains all the test data from jim and the charts on individual tabs. I will go through and do a comparison set at 150 lbs as re run the points system as some of the test have been extended the final values from the curves do not always give a true reflection. Fixed at 150 lbs i hope will give a better comparable result for the divisible indicators.

Thanks to Jim for the data and helping to work through the access issues in the software

DANG, you mean I should quit using that? :)

OK, seriously...nice color chart! The chart layout would indicate to me that the best oil based on the scar test is the one on the far left and the worst one is on the far right. IOW, if I wanted the best oil TEST-WISE I would simply pick whichever oil is on the far left in the latest test data. Is that correct? OTOH, several oils that have been used successfully for years by racers/street riders are in the middle or even well over toward the right side of the chart. Some of the most commonly used oils are pretty much in the right-center of the chart, which, I would think is what experience pretty much confirms.

If I am not understanding the chart as far as whether the right or left side is the "best oil," please advise. Where on this chart would a "vertical cutoff" line be drawn to show oils that are/are not recommended for use in a Commando.

I'm thinking of purchasing a new Triumph Street Cup so I don't have to worry about all this oil stuff! (Though I really do like the new Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe as well... ;)

its not quite so simple as that but yes that is the general trend. The bigger the purple and blue element the better also as these are friction and friction heat points. The higher the points they have the better they performed. The total chart is a combination of the points awarded for the categories in the tables below. Which are in rank order 1 top being best.

Points 1st = 25, 2nd 20, 3rd 16, etc the same as the allocation in WSBK racing.
The divisional numbers are to give a good trend ration indication so Force divided by friction means a high Force resistance divided by a smaller friction (less friction) will give a larger number. Makes high force high frictions more easily comparable to say a medium force but low friction. The same going from force over friction heat though i thick slightly less important as the friction heat generated relationship to the failure temperature of the oil dictated by the force value. Still of vlaue.

The points system may need to be factored weighted so force and fiction are say worth double points etc. But thats something for discussion to as what would be the best way to combine the metrics into something that best reflects the importance of the differing aspects.
