Gw and gr bullet connectors from switch .nowhere to plug into. 71 factory harness. Everything else checks out. Any ideas. Thanks.

If memory serves me right, the G/W and G/R from the switch harness each connects under the tank in a four way snap connector with the G/W (or G/R) from the headlight harness (to the headlight indicator lamp), the G/W (or G/R) from the front signal light, and the G/W (or G/R) from the main harness (to the rear signal lights).

I'm looking at the 71 wiring schematic. Those wires connect inside the headlamp shell. 4 way connector for each. Green/White is for the right hand signal, Green/Red is for the left. Green/White comes from the Rt handlebar switch to it's 4 way connector. The other 3 connectors out of that 4 way connector go to:
TS warning lamp
R/F turn signal lamp
Big connector under the fuel tank, then on to the R/R turn signal.

Green/Red does basically the same.
Rt Handlebar TS switch to 4 way connector
TS warning lamp [the other terminal on that lamp]
L/F turn signal lamp
Big Connector under the fuel tank, then on to the L/R turn signal.

Pull the headlamp off. Look inside for the green/white & green/red coming off the warning lamp. Those wires should lead you to the 4 way connectors. Plug your handlebar switch wires into to appropriate 4 way connector and you should be good to go, unless.... there are no other wires plugged into the 4 ways. Perhaps someone removed all that stuff from the headlamp to lessen the clutter in there?

I can email you the wiring schematic page for 1971. Just shoot me a PM [aka Conversation] here, with your email address. I'll send it right out. Just hold the cursor over your user name [top right]. From the menu that drops down, choose conversation. Then start a conversation with me.

Both LH and RH switch cluster wires '71-'74 run back under the fuel tank, they don't enter the headlamp shell and the schematic doesn't show that. The connectors are as RonL describes and as shown on the Lucas diagram at the rear of the headlamp harness section.

My bad. I suspect I'm confusing the Commando with a 71 Triumph. The 71 schematic agrees with your 72 schematic. That said, both schematics show green/white as the right TS circuit. The Lucas diagram you have linked above, shows it as the left. It does appear to show the connectors as being outside of the headlight shell.

Yes, unfortunately, there are a few errors on those 'Lucas' (Wassell Lucas) diagrams. 'L/H Switch' and 'R/H Switch' would only be correct for early models as the factory eventually swapped the switch clusters over due to customer demand.

What year was the switch over made? Was it done "mid year"?

Yes, during '72 (see Service Release N3/3 May '72, below) although from previous discussions it appears that dealers had been swapping the switches over before the factory change.

Norton Service Release N3/3

"Reversal of handlebar switch clusters.

Late 1972 Commando - all models.
Worldwide (for general distribution),
As a direct result of user requests for right hand operation of the direction
indicators, the decision has been taken to interchange the left and right hand switch clusters.
To save changing wiring colour identification at 6 connectors, the functions of kill button
and headlamp flasher and spare button and horn shown in Illustration 2 of the Riders Manual
are also reversed.
New prints of the handbook will include this modified layout but where motorcycles have been
despatched which are at variance to the handbook, the supplying dealer is requested
to acquaint the new owner with the revised layout. From the time of the changeover,
the revised control positions will be:

LEFT HAND
Top button - Headlamp flasher
Lever switch - Dipswitch
Bottom button - Horn

RIGHT HAND
Top button - Spare button
Lever switch - Direction indicators
Bottom button - Kill button

ACTION: Ensure that all new owners of modified models
are suitably briefed.

May 1972"

That's how I remember my 72 Triumph TR6R Tiger [my first bike] was set up. I can't remember how my 72 Combat was set up. I think it was the same.

Got it .cleaned up all bullet connectors. Replaced 4 wire female.had right turn only.jumped ground to left.got flash woohoo.supposed to be 58 on Thursday .putting the bitch back together for its first ride of 2018 if I don't die kicking it haha thanks again!

Just be aware the weakest earth path, of several, in Cdo's is the flaky plastic chrome plating of bulb mount then through stalks head shell nut clamping minus the earthing return goodness of the shell itself. Not bad id to use some moisture excluding regular grease on threads/terminals or better a conducting grease. hehe one my most satisfying/diagnostic experiences with Commando signal grimlems was infantile frustration striking the snot out of the misbehaving signal for it to work again, often repeated successfully, but lasting a days riding - till ran a tiny earth lead to trap under stem nut and a screw through shell for all earths to mate as one. Good to have signals working but not as effective as hand signals if practical to do too.
