My bike is a 71.

How easy is it to get the outer gearbox cover machined so I could fit the later "proper" oil seals to the kick start and gearchange lever?

I don't have the tools to do the job myself, but if I found a decent machinist and gave hime the cover and the seals, I should end up with a cover that works?

No need to do any machining. Pop one of these in the kick starter opening.

Napa carries them also.
Use a little heat on the cover and the retainer should drop out when you smack it on the work bench. Then you can drop the seal in.
The o-ring works on the shifter okay because it sits high enough on the gear box to be above oil level.
I fought the kick starter 0-ring for quite while but this completely solved the problem

RGM sell an X ring type seal for gear lever and kick start shaft. They simply fit where the O ring should go with no modifications or messing they could be worth a try before going to time an trouble of sending covers for modification. I have them an they work fine but I suppose a lot may depend on condition of your covers and the bushes an shafts etc. They are cheap though so if they don't work you won't have lost much in trying them first

Toppy,
I will add those to my RGM order, very well worth trying. I am recommissioning a new to me Fastback, that was restored around 14 years ago and has done very few miles since. To a degree I'm second guessing what was done during the restoration, cos I don't know. What I should do is the recommissioning work , oil lines oil system, brakes, wheel bearings etc etc, get it on the road and running and then see what I find, but I keep getting sidetracked by thinking that I should take the opportunity to rebuild gearbox, check layshaft bearing etc etc.

I followed the NOC link and might well go down this route:

I bought from Revolution Seals & Bearings on 01923 858385 - their reference number 4-019.

They have a website www.rsb.uk.com

+1
If these leak, you have other problems.....possibly bad bushings or scored shafts, which need correction for any seal to work.
