Bought my 961 brand new Dec. 2017, Reg. Jan. 2018 . Its been sat in the back bedroom until today when >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the Sun was out and the roads dry and just asking to be used .
Out onto the road and away , what a good feeling ......... handles well does just what I want ????????????.
knocking like no tomorrow whats going on ? engine management light on constant . I cannot believe this is happening . It was as if it was only running on one cylinder . Got home and pulled one of the plugs , still clean with a touch of black . Seemed like I `d had an engine as hot . any idea`s on what could be going wrong or is this knock normal ??

When is a knock a knock?!

They do rattle like a bag of nails. If you’re used to ‘proper’ modern bikes, and if your bike still has the OEM silencers on it (loud pipes mask the rattles) it could be that all you’re hearing is the ‘normal 961 character’.

As to the warning light, obviously that’s not right.

Have you had it on charge whilst it’s been stood?

These bikes do sometimes suffer unknown powers loss whilst stood. And a low battery can give all sorts of funny symptoms.

Thanks for the reply , the knocking just sounds wrong like if you went to view a bike you would give this a very wide birth , stay well away etc. I have run the bike a few times so as to keep the charge so the motor has not been under pressure ,ie. tick over with slight twist on the throttle .

Given how long it sat ‘in the back bedroom’ I would recommend getting a charger and ensuring the battery is fully charged.

Small errant electrical issues have been solved by some by disconnecting the battery for a while. This is a bit of a pain as it entails removal of the tank.

But, despite saying all of that, you have a fault light, a possible misfire and a worrying knocking noise. Sounds to me like it needs to go to a dealer or the factory for a once over.

FWIW, my money is on the knocking being normal!

When I first started my 691 I was a little startled by the noises, I raised an eyebrow or four, but was sorta prepared for this from what I had read elsewhere. Mine doesn't knock, it kinda thrashes about. If I had a bike which developed a 'knock' I would be looking for something that should 'move' within limits making contact with something that shouldn't move i.e. anything rubber mounted hitting frame or be looking for something that shouldn't move but now does i.e. exhaust mounting bolts, but you are suggesting it is coming from the running engine and the engine light is lit so I would get that checked out first.

Thanks again for the replys , I just wish it was for other reasons . Just pulled the other plug and looks the same . Black (sooty) all way around the bottom of threads whereas not all black on the other. ??? Both plugs in and nipped up . Just ran it a bit and seems a bit more quiet . Light still on .

No , it sounds the same Raphi. Anyway going back to the dealers at the weekend for them to sort out. Had a word with my eldest last night and he thinks it may be a fuel issue causing the light to stay . They can be very sensitive.

I assume it has the cat and original pipes and map.
Picked mine up in Oct 2017 and yes - I have stripped and rebuilt engines in the past sounding better than this. It has been described accurately as a jack-hammer. It takes some real guts to wind it up to 6000 on the motorway for the first time when its run in!

Bear in mind it's under warranty so go for it within the running in limits.

Mine had the engine light on when I picked it up! They reset it but 5 miles later it came on again and remained on almost constantly until the first service. Haven't seen it since. I let Clem know just to cover myself.

You really do need to get through pipes and remap and decat if poss. - it transforms the bike TOTALLY.

If you are still worried then you could get a listen to one of ours to compare. I use mine regularly to work and absolutely love riding it. Best fun I've had in years.

See you on the road - Clive

I had a lovely run on open winding roads yesterday so I made a point of taking each gearshift between 5k and 6k rpm.... I really had to grit my teeth for the first few changes but it soon becomes quite addictive :)

Grit your teeth to stop the fillings dropping out?

The worst of my vibes are somewhere North of 3750 and South of 4500.... I can't exactly recall as I tend to power through that now. From 4500 upwards she vibes a little but not harsh. The next fun and games will be trying to red-line her but I don't feel that brave yet ;)

Its built like a tank. You cant hurt it. The rev limiter will kick in. It happens to me all the time.

I found the bike comfy and set well for me (suspension ) and easy to throw around. I have a couple of Aprilia Tuono`s , best machine I`ve ridden but not as comfy as the Norton . I am looking forwards to it being run in and get some pipes sorted and re map. I am wondering though if it will need the cat for MOT ?

Emissions on bikes are not part of the MoT. Noise can be a concern, but most MoT testers will turn a blind eye especially if you take along your stock silencers to show that you have them.

Sometimes they put "noisy exhaust" on the advisory, to cover themselves. It's best that they can't see the warning that says "Not for road use" or similar. I found that with some exhausts that wording disappears if you "polish" it too hard :). One tester told me that if there happened to be some gaffa tape in that particular area, he wouldn't be allowed to remove it.

update on problem . Taken to the shop today (arranged ) and they listened ................ said the Lambda sensor at fault. One cylinder kind of firing then not , on, off,on,off...................
put new lambda sensors on and a standard remap . they went a little test ride and all OK.sounds better , enquired about de cat pipes and shorties ....................
