I put some genuine miles on my 71 today. Got it back from the engine rebuild about 2 weeks ago and I finally have plates on it.
It has been sitting for some 20 years in a real barn and has some neglect. I checked the brakes, tightened up what was loose and put some 30 or more miles on it.
It got me back home with all parts intact. Some adjustments to be made but this is real progress. A long way to go but it runs great.
I have to get rid of these 30 year old tires next.
I am on vacation this week and will be working with the small stuff.
Looking forward to doing the safety and reliability stuff.

Good for you ... just like a dream come true eh! ... you now have something to fill all your spare time with

Sounds familiar. I just finished putting 1000 miles on mine after a similar past. Have fun building the miles together!

Grats & may you have many more miles on the road.
BUT...
30 year old tires definitely qualify for "safety stuff".
Mooey dangerous!

In the RV community, standard practice is to replace tires at 7 years old, regardless of wear. We've only put 4800 miles on our motorhome is 4 years and we'll probably sell it at the end of this season. 8 mpg on $4/gallon gas and $40 a night campground fees make for expensive outings.

If tires ain't so brittle cracked the tube can budge out side walls then only danger is pressing luck in wet conditions other wise mainly a rougher ride to use up waiting on delicious new meats and a great opportunity to actually feel the amazing pleasant ride improvement. RV tires can last longer than 7 yr but law says they must be less than 7 yr old if on the road and wisely so d/t heat induced thread throwing or even blow outs. Old inner tubes are another story so good opportunity to practice on low air to sense a slow leak before it jerks stem out and rodeo riding onsets but will already know how to control it no problemo.
