Hi all
On the inside of the headlamp bezel are two tabs or fingers, I first thought these would sit either side of the clamp plate.... but there off to one Side so clearly aren't for that
It also looks odd as the rivet that mounts them is also sitting to one side
Checking on AN it clearly shows that the bottom locating lug isn't sitting 180 degrees opposite the mounting rivet
What are these fingers for as I can see no use for them? And why isn't the rivet at to centre directly opposite the lower lug

If I understand correctly what you are describing they are for properly orienting the head lamp.

OK thanks, can I check that when the headlamp is aligned with these registers using a H4 bulb or LED unit that the beam is correct
I have aligned as suggested, and with a H4 bulb the beam is at an angle.. to get the beam correct these register have to be apart
IT may be th case that with the OE pre focus bulb the beam is correct with the registers aligned??

Not at all sure about a pre focus bulb. The beam will not project a straight line, in the UK it will look a bit like this

the right side is lower to prevent blinding oncoming traffic. For those of us that drive on the right side of the road the pattern will be a mirror image.

with the top of the light oriented to 12 o'clock at 1 o'clock one of the tabs on the head light is in the fingers of the ring. At approximatly 6 and 10:30 there are tabs on the head light that do not align with anything. I suspect those are for different types of rings.

I don't have another bike with a circular headlamp' All my other mounts have modern squished design glass with the beam prism behind the bulbs in the reflectors and not on the glass
But all the bulbs sit with the top terminal horizontal
In the case of the Norton the prism is in the glass, and with the bulb sitting level i get the UK beam cut off as illustrated
With the headlamp sitting in the registers and bulb not at an angle. the cut off line is over 45 degrees
This is what makes me think the design was originally for a pre focus bulb

Don't know if this will help, here is a picture of mine, the top terminal is horizontal as you describe but the head lamp is in the register. The lamp is a Hella for right hand drive. Perhaps yours is a pre focus design good luck

If you look at the lower bezel locating lug (the one that aligns with the shell) it also indicates that the bulb is level
I have a new shell, bezel & lamp unit ...All Lucas, but with my bezel, lamp unit or both something has been put together wrong as mine is at a slight angle

Yours looks silmilar to mine Les, but is clearly different from Oldbeezers
The bulb top terminal is definitely not at 90 degrees to the lower lug, and will affect the cut off angle of th beam...Have you noticed this?

Oldbeezer's could be is a R/H dip unit (as he's posting from the US) as the bulb contacts look angled to the left?

I haven't and I've just checked two other L/H dip Lucas H4 headlamps and they are the same as the one in my photo so it seems that's how they're supposed to be as all three glass markings are vertical with the reflectors attached to the shells so the reflectors are correctly positioned.

Just checked a BMW flat twin L/H dip H4 and that's the same.
