I have close to 5000 images on Photobucket, a vast majority of them linked to this forum. When they screwed everyone over last year I kind of gave up. There were so many highly useful images that not only helped me but hopefully a lot of people here too.

Currently the only way to view them is to use a Chrome extension (which does work). There is also one for the Opera browser which 3 people in the world use).

My other choice was to download all of the images and start over. Except they have blocked almost all methods of downloading. Until I found this. Be warned it required command line but if you have access to that I literally just pasted the three commands into my terminal and BAM! it downloaded all of my images! While I have many of these pictures already it just means that I no longer even have to think about Photobucket.

This worked without flaw on my Mac. It should work the same on Linux. Windows may take some tweaking.

High level instructions:

Go to the first album in Photobucket and click any picture to select it. Now a Select All button will appear to the top left of the pictures. Click that.

Go to the next album. The Select All should be there. Click and wait until it completes. This took me a while as I have something like 100 albums. Down at the bottom of the screen you should see a count of the number of images that are selected. I did about 2000 the first time and 3000 the second.

When you are down with the Select All process you click the Link button on the bottom (near where you see the count). Find the Direct Link field and copy.

Paste into any text editor. Save file as photobucket_files.txt in a folder called photobucket on your desktop.

Now run the command line scripts. The first one navigates to the folder. The second one finds all of the photos in the root Photobucket folder (Your Bucket) and the third command finds all of the photos you have in the folders. It only goes down one level so if you have nested folders you need to move the images to a first level folder.

It will take a few minutes to run (many in my case) but you will get all of the original files in the folder neatly organized by folder.

I'll store these and then start the process of loading to Flickr, until Flickr decides to screw us over too.

Oh, and FU to Photobucket. May they burn in hell. I'll provide the gasoline.

Thank you I have been pestering all the young blood in the house as to how to get my pictures back for a year. I now have them again
BIG BIG CHEERS Thank you. Regards Staffs

I have gave up but lucky I didn't have to many pics in photo bucket so I said screw them.

I downloaded all of my pictures using a $1.95 Chrome add-on. I had to install Chrome first but then it worked great.
Then I deleted Chrome as I am one of the 3 people who use Opera -and like it. Jim

For me I've dabbled in the Terminal enough to be dangerous. Plus since it was copy/paste for the commands it's easier than it sounds. So glad to be done with Photobucket once and for all. Now if I could just find time to fix all those links. Between broken link due to the new forum and the missing pictures it might need to wait until I'm retired.

Jim,
I mention this for those of us who use Firefox [from the folks who actually invented the web browser]. Firefox also has an add on to defeat the PhotoBucket blocking. If you are using Firefox, see the link below to get the needed add on. It works great for me.

Thanks for that Chrome Add On....now I can see all the older PhotoBucket images on this site!

FYI, I use an old school on-line photo gallery called PBASE.COM
Built for photographers and not for commercial adverts....It has no advertising, allows full screen viewing, image linking to serve up your photos at other websites like this one. Been using it since Digital photog was just getting started...year 2000 I believe!

What other sites are people using for image hosting ? PBASE.COM offers a 'trial account', but it looks as though there is something else involved. I notice that some images which have been recently posted on this forum, later appear blanked out. Why does this happen ? I have a fairly large hard drive, so I have kept everything I uploaded to Photobucket. I also write my pictures directory to DVD from time to time.

Another option for this site...join the VIP membership (small charge) and then you can upload your shots to this site to be stored and displayed (using the "Upload a file" option when posting a message...hidden from non-VIP's).

How much is 'a small charge' and why would I want to hide photos from non-VIP members ? - That sounds like a way to induce more people to become VIP members. I realise it costs money to run a website, but altruism is often better than money-motivation in terms of satisfaction.

Not what he said. He said the Upload a file button is only seen by members.

Image storage costs hard drive space....you want the AccessNorton site owners to pay for all that, no adverts on this site...I'd like to keep it that way! Don't mind paying for the small fee (see the membership page for details). The very first time you use the knowledge on these forums, you've saved very much money from paying for a pro to fix something for you. Worth every penny!

Appreciate swooheroo's intense geeky tedious solution to poopoobucket flushing on us. Firefox workaround left in other posts worked to view old images for me but I've a lot on poopoobucket I'd like to have in groups I uploaded rather that sort through 1000's on a 'brick' back up drive. Hm, I do want to put my ashes in a gas tank with a storage device for others to snicker over a long time.

Btw I'm being tutored on cloud storage which may be another way to save.

wasn't clear to me from glancing at this stuff so just to be clear to folks who may be looking into this for the first time, these extensions allow viewing of active photobucket pix in threads

wonderful to revisit this thread alone & see the pix again

Yes, good to be able to see the pictures, in my case I wanted to retrieve them from Photobucket. While I have most of the images somewhere they weren't as organized as I had them in Photobucket. So now I have organized backups of the pictures.

wow, haven't gone there yet but sounds like u can't even get access to your account or the pix without paying up ..ffs,

the workaround for that sounds like something that requires skills that few would have

Unfortunately this is probably true. I will say if you have Mac it's actually quite easy, you follow the instructions and just copy and paste the code. It really does the rest for you.
