I just got back from NCDMV tag office with a title/registration card/tag for my commando!! at last after many many months we are legal...in case anyone cares to try and tag an antique vehicle in NC with no title here is what you have to do
1. make sure bill(s)of sale are notarized
2. set up time/place for NC Highway Patrol License and Theft officer to inspect vehicle..i had them come to my house but had to wait 2 1/2 weeks or you can trailer vehicle to their office.
3. inspector will take pics of engine/frame numbers and vehicle overall and run tnumbers on the spot through national theft database..he had a computer in his car for that..mine came back engine clean frame to stolen but recovered bike of different brand back in 1978...the six digit Norton numbers proved challenging for the database.
4. Officer fills out an inspection report and will send it to you.
5. In the meantime you fill out and have notarized an affidavit of facts concerning how you got the vehicle and why no title.
6. You get 2 valuations from credible sources...thanks Rick at Sandy Run Cycles in Shelby and Greg Marsh in virginia!!
7. Take valuations to insurance bond place..state farm did mine...get bond.
8. Get insurance..ditto state farm...get proof of insurance document
9. take all paper work to DMV and pray.
10. I paid state/dmv $160 for title and other fess and tag and bond was $100.
This is a long and not so cheap process but I am now an expert at it..hope this helps someone out

Very generous of you to write that up.
Bet it feels great to be legal!

Good to know. I had heard of stories in NC where bikes were impounded due to no title.

Glad they've moderated their procedures to non-gestapo level tactics.

Good on you Alan , quite a process , suspect it would be similar just about anywhere , in fact very similar to what you would do here in Nova Scotia .... just a shout out for Sandy Run Cycles they have nice T shirts , enjoy wearing mine !

When I got my 1970 Roadster it was in pieces and the son of the original owner who had passed away couldn't be bothered to help me get a title. Texas DMV told me I would have to go through probate court. Took the bike to a friend in NM where at the time you could take the vehicle to one of their offices and get a bonded title. At that time it took less than 1 day to have a title in his name, he lived there not me. Then back to Texas pay a new to "Texas fee" of $90 plus title and tag fees. It is now up and running, matching numbers and the title doesn't say bonded title on it.
My friend recently acquired a 46 Chevy truck, that was a whole lot more complicated. When it was originally titled they went by the engine number and that had been swapped out in the 60's. The widow of the original owner is now living in Washington and if you want a duplicate title you have to show up at DMV in NM. Cost him around a grand to get the title for a free truck due to new "fees" and that DMV bases the valuation on the truck on a restored one and showing them pictures of the truck as is didn't make a difference. It's all about the money.
