A few weeks back while out on a ride the numberplate and rear light disappeared on the road somewhere from my early commando. I'm in process of putting things back together with bits from here and there, but wanted to doublecheck something. Looking at the drawings I've seen it looks like the only thing holding on the rear light unit is the two screws which bolt through the fiberglass rear tail, is that correct?

Looking a the below it would be bolt number 29.

Any advice gratefully received.

Darren.

Does yours use a plate like no. 7 or like no.17? Mine is an export model, so it uses no. 7 and has two bolts to the fender as well as the tail section.

If you have plate no.17, I think yours is supposed to also bolt on to the fender with bolt no. 24 and spacer no. 10.

Hi Derek, not 100% certain what it had as I've lost that bit, but I've ordered a new part that looks like 17 and looks to bolt to fender, plus has two holes in top. The issue I've got is that the two holes in my fiberglass tail unit (12) are broken, which is probably how I lost the taillight & number plate etc. I'm thinking now I'll cut some thin steel and place it insider the fiberglass tail to repair the broken holes and help clamp the fiberglass tail, the plate 17 and the light unit together.

I had an accident with my '68 fastback and tore the plate and light off. I used Bounce sheets (clothes dryer anti-wrinkle sheets) that I rinsed, dried and cut into inch wide strips for the fibreglass repair. The texture looks exactly like the original and once I repainted, you can't really notice the repair at all. Hope this helps.

That sounds pretty ingenious but given my limited skills I'm probably better at cutting a thin plate and the gluing it to inside of the fiberglass.

It is secured by the two bolts (#29 in your attachment) mounting the taillight AND the lower 5/16-24 X 3/4 bolt from the fender to the tab on the license plate bracket.

By the way, I don't believe that plate shown as #7 will work with a fastback fender. The Roadster fender is longer and has the two holes at the bottom for the two bolts of the #7 plate.

Thanks for the picture Ron. My fastback looks just like the image, or it will do when I put it back together again. Darren.

the lower 5/16-24 X 3/4 bolt from the fender to the tab on the license plate bracket.

The rear number plate bracket bolt is 06.0327 and nut 03.3057 which, according to AN are 1/4" UNF.

Items 5, 20 & 21.
