I find it interesting to note the difference between places like Fakebook and forums like Access Norton. Our lovely (generally) polite forum is miles ahead of the social media from a lot of different viewpoints. When new people enter our world, they are generally here to acquire knowledge from the experienced people on here.

Fakebook is an entirely different thing. Somebody posts on FB about their wonderful, rare model and proceed to tell you all about the outstanding features like the 16" wide rear rim, the Combat 850 motor with the "race" cam, all, of course, fitted at the factory. All of this was told to them by the previous owner, who'd had the bike stored for ten years waiting for a new owner who could appreciate all of these options. and pay the requisite amount of money to acquire this rare, previously unheard of, one of a kind, factory race bike. Because he'd been told this by the bloke he'd bought it from!

I joined Fakebook basically for my two businesses, but after being called "mouthy" and a "Facebook fuckwit" by a man who has an "SS Combat Interstate", I'm over it. After pointing out a few facts regarding what he actually had, the childish, ignorant and abusive shit that seems to be part and parcel of Fakebook life descended on me.

They actually treat FB as an information source rather than the social media sandbox that it is. I'm going to bail out as the marketing and promotional side of things is just not worth the crap you put up with.

Thank God for Jerry Doe and Access Norton!

I started using Facebook for software technical recruiting (another life) while at EMC. I closed my account after getting sucked into an endless argument with a real loser, who said she had 5 degrees and couldn't find a job. The argument got real heated when I suggested that she apply to McDonalds and aspire to Crew Chief, or to apply at the US Postal Service, if she had a bullet proof vest...

I was at a wedding and went for desert. One of the guests was using her cell phone to take a picture of one of the cakes. I asked her why and she said liked the cake, but wanted to put it on Facebook and see if any of her "friends" knew what kind of cake it was. I pointed to the sign above the cake that announced that it was carrot cake, and that it contained no pine nuts or peanuts. What a waste of oxygen.

Not only does social media cater to the intellectually challenged, but the fat cats collect bits of data on where you go, what you write, and now, how you write it, so they can sharpen the attack on your frontal lobes. I find this quite disturbing.

Just about every where I go I see people with heads hung down, both hands on a phone amusing themselves in some way, to the point where, if I really wanted to be innocuous I be doing a simulation of the same behavior; sad. I enjoy the absence of the words "like" and "basically" as well as the hackneyed phrase "you know". The Zombie apocalypse may be upon us.

This forum is, indeed, a wellspring of information and fellowship. Even when the same questions comes back there is always a nugget of new information. Even when a question appears poorly thought out someone answers with more than a modicum of dignity.

I too am on Facebook and I get a lot of sales (Norton) from it so its good free advertising. Yes there are a lot of "experts"
on the Norton pages and you will find these "experts" are only there because they have been banned by other reputable
sites. So there they can start "knowlegable" conversations and when they find out they are in to deep then they just delete
the post. I mostly stop giving advice there.

It's Facebook ! It's handy for a club information exchange, setting up meets etc on a local or national level. The MK1STOC guys use it for parts exchange And as as we are all spread about the continent as well as the UK all get togethers are posted on the Facebook page. The group is small and there is no real arguments as such only minor clashes . And when you meet up you meet the blokes that are on the site and no mega Facebook bullshitters. Only my opinion though.

By the way Don your carb gantry, it's alright ,easy to fit works like a charm!

I have never joined Faecesbook and never will despite pressure from family and friends. Being the unsociable bastard that i am helps. It can be a pain at times though. My dog club only posts on FB if events are cancelled assuming that everybody is on it. I have raised this at meetings and all i got was blank stares. In the time of mobile phones and email it has never been easier to contact people i want to so i don't worry about it too much. From the outside it seems to be inhabited by a lot of insecure people and keyboard warriors. I don't need people to 'Like' what i am doing in order to feel good about myself. Just recently a young 14 year old girl that appeared in an add for Akubra here in OZ had taken her own life because of bullying on FB. How sad is that. When i see Zukker doing one of his presentations in his mandatory grey t shirt and blue jeans pretending he is "one of us" it just pisses me off. I don't really want him monetizing my personal life, there is enough of that going on already. I am not the greatest poster on this forum but it seems to be inhabited by good sincere people, very similar to the R.A.T. Forum by the way. Cheers.

Mr. Roadscholer,

You have put into words much better than I ever could, the reasons I've never joined facebook.
And If I hear someone beginning a sentence with "so" ever again ----- grrr !
sam

"So" is a legitimate beginning to a sentence. I am going to post on here what I had for breakfast, with photos, and my thoughts on Trump and Russian collusion.

Please like and share.

I'm going to an engine coarse next week with one of the guys from Glasgow initial contact and the details came from Facebook. Clive Wood who is running it says it's the easiest way for him to inform people. After that it's the usual phone call and chat to finalise details. No photos of food or the map saying at the bus stop, ferry terminal etc. Can't see any problem with that, it's not as if you're going to turn up to a bloke dressed as Frank n Furter offering you a cocktail!

Never been to FB , no intention of heading there , maybe too old and foolish ..... sure don’t like some of the stuff that happens online , all the fake advice , news etc. , am on a couple of bike related forums , for the most part populated by reasonable folks ,thank goodness

I am with you, Ken. My account was deleted years ago. What a waste of time reading all the crap. Never looked back.
