Ok first off just started a 71 750 roadster and I'm working on the complete tear down . Ok so what's the best way to remove the exhaust ring I don't want to beat the hell out of them unless that's the beat way and one more question the contacts and the part behind it the the norton manual says use a slide hammer to remove now what is the thread size I see in the book that this slide hammer is used alot .
Thanks Tom

On the exhaust ring, if you are talking about the finned exhaust nuts, the best way is with the exhaust nut spanner. Look on Ebay.

In the second part of your question are you referring to the auto advance unit under the contact breaker points?

The exhaust nuts are best removed with the proper wrench. It's "C" shaped with a long handle similiar to that of a shock tool only bigger & thicker.

The advance unit behind the points plate can be removed with the small slide hammer tool or by inserting the bolt back into the hole and tapping lightly on it side to side with a hammer. Maybe squirt some penetrating oil in there first and let it soak while you have a smoke and then remove.
Patience is the key .........

If you don't have a proper tool for the exhaust nuts you can use a pipe wrench. Sometimes those nuts get on there really tight and by torquing too hard on them you can put them out of round and then you're really in trouble. Try different positions with your wrench so you're not always stressing the same area of the nut. 2 of the fins on the nuts are filled in with solid metal so that's the ideal place to hook onto but try different areas if it's stubborn.

I'm with Tim on the auto advance. Just a bolt that screws in and some light sideways taps on it and it should pop out. They aren't in very tight.

Hi Tom,
like everyone says, use the correct C spanner. BUT heat the head up 1st as this expands more than the Exhaust nut & there will be less chance of damage when loosening them.
Then on doing up again after rebuild, heat the engine up 1st then fully tighten the exhaust nuts wityh the ciorrect spanner & they should not come undone again.
Mine are done up this way & have stayed tight for 2 years now without any locking rings.
The brass exhaust nuts are best in my opinion.
Best of luck with the rebuild.
Cheers Don

Perhaps not everyone, as I found my BMW exhaust nut spanner works better than the Norton 'factory' C-spanner!
Exhaust rings removal ?

However it may not fit all types of Commando exhaust nuts.

Shocking impact works best on long mated parts especially the exhaust 'ring bolts'.
I like a big pipe wrench with 4 ft breaker bar myself but often have to heat the rings up good then wait a bit for heat to flow to head and rings to cool shrink then with heavy drift/blunt chisel and even bigger whammer squat down to get aim on the thick block fins taking some care to miss me and machine. I'd had them come loose riding, [who hasn't] so standard practice is do em up cold then do up em up again hot. Springs work better to keep a tad of torque on em as fold tabs and wire then to get just enough slack to let threads slightly loose and beat the snot out of the Al threads over time.

I didn't know BMW had the same set up.

It's similar, but the BMW nut has an internal thread.

I'm sure it's pure coincidence that the BMW tool fits the Norton nut!

Hi LAB,
Looks to me like the correct Norton spanner is not the best.
The BMW tools looks to be the Dogs B****x.
A much better piece of kit than the Norton one.
There are a few different type of Norton nuts so just check they are compatible with this spanner before buying.
I'm that impressed with the spanner I now want to buy a 1200GS.
Has everyone seen "The Wrong Bike" on UTube. Its now back on UTube and quite funny.
Cheers Don

Wow now that a nice spaner wrench and thanks for all the great info and I planed on changing to exhaust nuts when get to putting the exhaust back on . As for the advance I'll try the bolt and so light beating :) I need to get this all motor apart so o e j can free up my lift and twoi go on night for two weeks and that a great time to do government work lol

Looking up the bmw wrench it appears there are several very nice variations that may fit the different types of norton nuts.

Ok so i left to pentrating oil on the nuts last night and with some miner grunting there off and away ad for the advance some light tapping and she came right out. Now new question the head bolts on the base of the jugs what kinda of wrench should I buy to get these off ???

Did you have to modify the wrench in any way, like grind off one or more fins from the wrench? I don't think it will fit the narrow 750 nuts. They have a different spacing between the fins and they are not tapered like the 850's. I would love one to fit the 750. Thanks for posting the tool.

A good set of withworth open end/ring spanners and withworth sockets are your best friends for working on these motors, gear box and primary any other spanners won't fit properly.

No, that's how it's made.
