I just ordered up a set of these rims Excel wm3 19" shouldered. Having second thoughts. Clearence? Weight?Thinking about wm2 19" NON shouldered. Much lighter. Running Avon Roadriders.
Although this is somewhat of a general question, I do not wish to debate over Akront or Borriani or other unattainable rims. Sun, maybe.

What do you think?

wm4 is the required size for the 100/90 road rider, fullauto run the wide rims and said front tyre clearance is tight

So what I hear is that the wm4 is tight so the wm3 will fly?

The Avon site says 2.15 to 2.75 for the 100/90 19. I am running them on the stock WM2's and seem to go fine.

I've 18"x WM3 rear and 19" WM2 front non shouldered Ecels mounted on Ms Peel
I've put on 130 rear width tire and 90/90 on front. Prior ran 120 size rear more than fine on WM3 rear rim. I'd vote WM3 rear WM2 front 120 is tight fitting but gives extra mileage with hardly a notice of its extra mass. The manufactures vendors are being over conservative on the rim widths vs tires. The more narrow canoe shape the profile the nicers it gets. Ther contact area remains the same. Be aware no after market Al rim has the dimples/hole impressed angled enough for front disc not to bend spokes some nipped up but its a non issue but to close inspection visual.

the WM3 with a 100/90 on the front can have clearance issues. I prefer the wm2 and 90/90 front. I would say to use a WM3 100/90 rear and wm2 90/90 front. not a fan of wider rims on a commando.

Hey,

100/90 in the front will work great. No clearance issues on the height or widht if you have a std Commando front end. A wm3 is the right size on the rim for the 100/90 in order for the tire to seat properly. If you use a wm2 rim you will baloon the tire and change the footprint.

Weight difference between shouldered and non shouldered is barely noticable (besides both are much lighter than the stock, steel rim)

Shouldered is beautiful but maintenance heavy due to the bathtub effect on the bottom

Std Excel looks close to the stock Dunlop rim

Sun is ultra clean with the non dimpled design and of course, its made in the USA.

Thanks Matt, that's the conformation i was looking for.

I have had clearance issues with a STOCK fender with a WM3 100/90 combo on the front. it will need some work with the fender stays on some bikes to clear or you could buy the CNW fender :D

Of course, there are different stock fenders depending on year.

Just measured a brand new, Andover Norton, late model fender that I am using on a bike with a 100/90 (wm3 rim). I have 1/2" between widest part of the tire and the fender stay (on each side)

The CNW front fender is actually narrower than that stock fender.

If you do have an early, chrome, narrow fender, then you may have some issues. Not sure as I dont have one in front of me to measure.

Also something thats important to consider is that tires from different manufacturers will be different dimensionally, even if you have the same size. The Bridgestones that I use are 3 3/4 wide (100/90-19")

I run WM4 19 inch non-shouldered rims with 100/90 Avon Roadriders. I had to replace the front guard inner mounting bolts with button headed cap screws to get the tyre in the front and on the back I ran the lower shock mounting bolt with the nut on the outside (which somebody pointed out was the standard method anyway!) to get clearance. However, the benefits are great. I must point out that the Avon website recommends that this tyre is made for a WM4 (2.5 inch wide) with the other widths being acceptable. I've run with Roadriders for some years now and I've been through quite a few of them (37 new tyres between the Commando and the Buell in 5 years). On the standard 1.85" (WM2) rim they are a great tyre. On the 2.5" rim they remove the standard Commando steering foibles almost completely. Taking your hand off the bars at 35 or so MPH doesn't result in a wobble anymore. Stability at any speed is excellent. Steering is as light as you would wish. I've tried to talk Matt into trying the combination but he hasn't so far. I would be so bold as to say that if he does try it, He's going to have a lot of surplus to requirements 18 inch rims and Bridgestone tyres! The combo makes the wheels look bigger and takes away what I call "The moped effect".

I just wish that someone else out there would try it. It is, after all, the recommended combo by the manufacturer.
