I believe the bike I just bought has matching frame and engine numbers,I verified they both match.
I'm told buy someone that has worked on Nortons for years that the engine number should have a 0 with 2 lines thru it before and after the engine number, which mine does not have. Any input is appreciated.
thanks

Never heard of a 0 with 2 lines through it, but then there are a lot of things I haven't heard. Mine doesn't either.

Late model Commandos have a symbol that LOOKS like a zero with two horizontal lines through it; one each before and after the serial number.

Early ones 20 series stamped around the curve of the cylinder base, and early models using the raised pad, don't have those symbols, from what I've seen.

Actually it's a circle with three horizontal lines (Triumph used them too, see below) which prevented anyone stamping any extra digits, however as grandpaul has said those limit stamps were not used on early Commandos.

the bike is a 1973, sorry I left that out

I'm not sure exactly when the limit stamps were first used? I think it was sometime during 1973 or '74, so I doubt there's anything wrong with your Commando's numbers.

My 7/74 850 dosn't have them. I think they started on the e-starts. I could be wrong.

It is what's in the middle that counts. The frame at the neck, the numbers between the symbols and across the top of the gearbox along the casting where the long bolt goes through. All three will indicate a matching numbers unit.
