Looking for alternative locations to place the electrical ground on my engine. I've just fitted the Dave Taylor headsteady with MKIII suspensory spring arrangement. I'd previously run the ground line to the headsteady plate at the one of the two smaller bolt holes for the spring bracket fitment. I just find running the wire there make it too visible for my tastes. Is there a better placement someone has used?

In all honesty, the spring will probably provide a pretty good ground path back to the frame, but I guess a cable is 100% sure to. How about bolting it to the ISO cradle ?

Put grd. wire under plate attachment on head , then up headsteady along spine back to battery , I never notice it and spend some time looking at that bike .....

Placing it under the plate would mean needing to even up the other two attachment point with washers?

Was wondering about that. Just didn't fell right to have a bouncing electrical contact serving as engine earth.

I don't think there's ever a time when the ends aren't in contact. Another thought though why not run an additional wire down to the points cover and attach it to the stator plate.

Sorry Toro , if I did ,don’t recall , like mentioned , just don’t notice ...

Mike, i just ran the electrical ground wire down the middle of the spring and attached it to one of the bolts/ taped holes on the head steady. ( ive got Jim Comstock headsteady, and it has tapped hole on the front edge to mount the spring anchor plate.

Can you post a pic or point me to one of how the spring assy is mounted on JC's steady?

I made up a heavy gauge link wire from the engine-mounted rose joint to the threaded bobbin mount on the frame.

I suggest that you attach a ground wire/connector to a bolt on the engine itself. There needs to be a good-quality ground to the engine. It can come from the harness or directly from the battery. The fewer connections involved, the better.

Harness ground to frame to head steady and hoping it then makes a good ground to the engine is not optimum.

Not so visible with the tank on...

Electrical Earthing/Grounding Point?

The best earth you can provide is straight to the battery from every electrical item on your bike, including the frame. Don't rely on the frame and you wont be disappointed. Make sure the engine to battery wiring has plenty of flex in it so it wont break.

#1 answer. I run a podtronics unit so all my grounds from battery, engine and harness terminate on the Z plate where the zener diode used to be.

I think I have around 7 diferent earth wires straight from the battery (pos)

The clutch cable works quite well as an earth as long as your steering bearings aren't too greasy!
;) ;) ;) ;)

Fit an e-start - you will have a fat old cable from the battery straight to the inner primary - LOL

I have a home-made Dave Taylor/Comstock/CNW-esque headsteady. I made my own studs that thread deep into the head, topped with acorn nuts. The harness is grounded to the center stud - Not noticeable at all.

FWIW
