Jeeze, are you all gammy legged? I reckon kicking the bitch into action is classy, manly, demonstrates a confident understanding of your machine & saves needless weight & complication.

well said.

One of the coolest things about my norton is kicking it over. Something super cool about the feeling of starting a bike with your foot.

"Bring out the gimp"
"Thats not a motorcycle honey, its a scooter"
Ok, so - that last one may be paraphrasing a bit..

When the Amal slides are nearing their end-life and you are waiting for the red light to change with a lineup of traffic behind you and the idle speed turns to zero, you might be very appreciative of an "E" start. The woman in her SUV behind you on the cell phone doesn't understand nor appreciate the manly art of kickstarting a motorcycle.

well said, especially if you're facing uphill and you're 66.

Even more well said.

+ 1 Jim C. Youth is still wasted on the young, thank goodness wisedom isn't! I like the simpilcidy of my kick start but I've been around long enough to witness some of the most " manly" grow old & lose the ability to ride some of their bikes. We are blessed to be living at a point where the Alton & Oldbritts systems are being made practicle. I'm olny 51 ( I know you puppies think that's old ) but my right leg is getting week from a back injury done as a jelly brained kid. If I only knew then what I still don't know now!!!

I will be installing an electric Alton starter this summer, here are my reasons in order of importance to me:

1) Quick starting in traffic if I stall the bike (it can happen and I live in a high traffic area in Palo Alto CA)
2) Quick starting with a passenger, in traffic and just leaving the coffee shop, just convenient and low drama
3) Easy starting on a hill, as sometimes I have been caught up in traffic in our local hills and "could" stall it on a switchback, with or without a passenger
4) No kick back worries
5) I am not getting younger, just don't want anything holding me back from just getting suited up and going for a ride on my Norton
Note to self ~ I can always kick start if I really want to. I just wonder how many of us would kick start if we had an Alton starter?

Should I add anything folks?

I've got the needless weight & complication, but I never use it.
Maybe one of these days I'll hook it back up and start pushing the button.

Wait for the belt drive version?

Changing to a belt just isn't that high on my list of prioraties, However before I forked out $2,500 for a E-Start I'de like to know it was compatible just in case I do see the light & go for a belt.

Anyone done [or seen] a Coffman starter for a Commando?
Could perhaps build it into a incorporated decompression system, use the mainframe tube as a compressed air tank, &/or the shot-gun cartridge method for the pyrotechnical types.

Now you are speaking hobot's language. Gee ossifer those shells are for starting my Norton, I can see it now

Even more elusive when it comes to getting your work done from what I've heard...
