I've bought an headlamp in ebay.
It was anounced as «Brand new genuine Lucas high quality 7 inch right hand drive (dip to the Left) H4 headlamp. Domed glass headlamp Marked; "LUCAS H4"», text copied from the original ad right now.
Today I've received it and unfortunately it's far away from the description in that there's no visible «Lucas» mark. Instead it's marked with the text «AUTOPAL» there where the genuine ones state «Lucas»

Re: ebay fraud

Sorry, that's MODERN Lucas branded stuff. Technically it is "genuine", but not the CLASSIC genuine stuff.

Re: ebay fraud

Did you check the backside for the silkscreened marking that says that? I'll bet it's there somewhere.

Looking at the photo in the e-bay ad, I didn't see the "Lucas" formed-in-production marking on the face; a dead give-away...

Many of these Lucas LUB 383 headlamps seem to be marked "Lucas H4".

Have you contacted the seller to express your dissatisfaction with their product description? If not then I suggest you be tactful if you do, as blatantly accusing them of fraud is perhaps not the best way to get results.

That is NOT a classic headlight lens, it's a modern Lucas part. I think the O.P. wanted a classic one, otherwise, what's the problem?

I think Fritz is aware of that, at least I hope so, as the item shown in the ebay ad. is plainly a modern "Lucas" headlamp unit.

The problem appears to be that the particular item he has been sent is not marked "LUCAS" on the lens. He only remarked that the item wasn't genuine, not "classic".

If you are not set on installing an original classic part on the bike (OEM / NOS), then it should matter very little whether it says Lucas on it, as it is a modern, replacement, aftermarket part that likely does the job as well as any other non-original part.

Are these new "Lucas" headlight lenses made in England? (just wondering) If not, there is even less reason to want one on a restored classic.

The seller seems to offer return so take it if you are not please. Agree to leave out
any "fraud" mention.
NOS stuff is thin on the ground now, too much time has passed. It does surface from
time to time and the price usually is very high and, if you are doing a restoration, that
is just how it is now.
Nortons, Triumphs, BSA were pretty common so parts are really not all that tough to
acquire. But,for some bits, you'd think you owned a Velo or any other lowish production
marque.

I remembered this thread when I was fitting one of the units mentioned by the OP,they were in the mail when I first read this thread.
It was the same eBay seller (iirc) and both have the lens like that picture posted by L.A.B with LUCAS.
The unit itself seems like good value and quality,I would imagine Lucas parts are still manufactured in the UK ?
I would like to know where all those new Lucas indicators come from, the same source perhaps ?

No Lucas now get copies made in China, and then these are also made in China for non Lucas buyers. The Lucas sourced Chinese product has a better chance of being good quality than non Lucas sourced.

What has me puzzled is the hefty prices being asked for red and orange reflectors of varous types.
They must have cost only cents to make, and less than that these days.
But some of them are like gold.
What gives ??
