I took this Fastback oil tank out of the frame for internal cleaning and saw some interesting points.
The large threaded hole is the oil supply to the engine. The barbed fitting has a mesh screen similar to later Commando.
The oil return next to it has an internal pipe that discharges near the filler neck to visually verify oil return.
Chain oiler line nub off of the return connection same as later tanks.
The bottom mount is a non-threaded peg with a rubber grommet that fits into the frame tray similar to later style.
Why did the Commando get the threaded bottom bolt that was prone to cracking?
Note the two curved pipe section on the left of the picture (front of the tank) are for the oil level sight tube.
This bike had a black piece of tubing on it and a level stick on the oil cap.
I suppose originally there would be a decal on the tank that marked Low and High levels?
This inside the frame view makes the tank look completely different than later models.
I will check the capacity with water to see how much to come up to the sight level tube.
